Our April 2020 Frequency Fridays show features experimental music duo Al Margolis (clarinet, violin, objects, electronics) and Tom Hamilton (electronics), experimental percussionist Rob Funkhouser, experimental percussion duo Neutrals, and performance artist Aleha Solano. Date: Friday, April 3, 2020. Location: 13 E. Tulane Rd. 43202. Admission: $10 for one, $15 for two. Doors open 7:30pm. All ages, BYOB. Our Frequency Fridays 2019-2020 season is supported by grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Columbus Foundation.

About the artists:

Tom Hamilton has composed and performed electronic music for over 40 years, and his work with electronic music originated in the late-60s era of analog synthesis. Hamilton was a 2005 Fellow of the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, participating in a residency at the foundation’s center in Umbria. Hamilton’s performing and recording colleagues have included Peter Zummo, Bruce Gremo, Karlheinz Essl, Bruce Arnold, Bruce Eisenbeil, Rich O’Donnell, William Hooker, Thomas Buckner, Al Margolis, and id m theft able, and he has also performed with Composers Inside Electronics. Hamilton has released 16 CDs of his music; his CD London Fix received an award in the Prix Ars Electronica, and a 2 CD set of his electronic music of the 1970s was named one of The Wire’s Top 50 Reissues of 2010, and a recent CD City of Vorticity was included in the Best of 2016 by Perfect Sound Forever. Since 1990, Hamilton has been a member of the late composer Robert Ashley’s opera ensemble, performing sound processing and mixing in both recordings and concerts. His audio production can be found in over 70 CD releases of new and experimental music.

Al Margolis (If, Bwana) has been an activist in the 1980s American cassette underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig Music and was co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, making music that has swung between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. He has recorded and/or performed with Pauline Oliveros, Ione, Joan Osborne, Monique Buzzarté, Katherine Liberovskaya, Adam Bohman, Ellen Christi, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jane Scarpantoni, Ulrich Krieger, David First, and Dave Prescott, among others. Performed as part of GRM Présences Electroniques Festival, the 50th anniversary of INA GRM in Paris, the 15th Brooklyn College Electroacoustic Music, and the 6th Sonic Circuits DC festivals; has had installations at Diapason in NYC and the Santa Fe Electroacoustic Music Festival. Margolis continues to collaborate live with video artist Katherine Liberovskaya and performs as part of a laptop duo with Doug Van Nort and an electronic/acoustic duo with Tom Hamilton.

Rob Funkhouser is a composer, performer, and instrument builder who can never quite sit still. He recently received an M.M. from Butler University in Music Composition, and most recently completed confidently, but with an awkward gait for the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet. He has released projects through various labels in three different countries, and has had his music played on the radio in many places, including Australia. His current projects include music for Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park in partnership with Classical Music Indy and a new work for the Indianapolis ensemble Forward Motion. Currently residing in Indianapolis, Indiana, Funkhouser divides his time between composing, performing, and curating shows at various venues around the city. His performances vary widely, but often take the form of solo percussion or ambient electronics. He also collaborates with a wide variety of performers and artists. Most recently he has worked with Forward Motion, Corey Denham, Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, and Classical Music Indy. His principal teachers include Dr. Michael Schelle, Dr. James Aikman, and Dr. Frank Felice. He also serves as the Operations and Education Manager at the Rhythm Discovery Center for the Percussive Arts Society.

Neutrals is a percussion duo based in Dayton, OH. Formed in 2016 by Evan Miller and Andrew Seivert, the duo combines their Rust Belt underground upbringings and classical training into a contemporary ensemble firmly grounded by their Midwestern roots. Equal parts written works and electroacoustic improvisation, Neutrals performs established percussion duo repertoire, drone/noise-based improvised music, and above all, commissioned works by living composers. Past and current collaborators include composers Rob Funkhouser, Nate May, Hugh Sheehan, and Brooks Frederickson, percussionist Aaron Michael Butler, Cincinnati experimental ensemble Knee Play, and Indianapolis-based production company NoExit Performance.

Aleha Solano is an Interdisciplinary Artist & Independent Curator based in Columbus, OH. She has been working with the human body giving life to imagery that has prolonged by tradition and the status quo of city inhabitants, showing their secrets, reviving the collective memory to build a portrait of a society and an era. Her most recent projects include GNÔTHI SEAUTON, (Ephemeral Performance Art Ensemble), her facet as DJ Aloha, music selector at MAPEANDO EL BEAT her TV show & her entrepreneurship project SOUNDCLASH ENTERTAINMENT, promoter of cultural experiences.
