Frequency Fridays

June 2024 Frequency Fridays: Shoko Nagai

History of Frequency Fridays

Frequency Fridays was launched in November 2010. The impetus for launching a performance program was twofold: first, we came to the realization that our annual juried exhibitions gave us ample opportunity to promote the work of artists suitable for gallery spaces, but very few opportunities to feature artists whose work was more performance based (such as circuit benders). Second, we also wanted to develop programming that took place more often than once a year, and felt that a performance series would allow us to engage with the public more often and provide a wider range of opportunities for artists both local and from around the US and abroad.

Since November 2010, we have organized fourteen seasons of our Frequency Fridays program, serving hundreds of electronic and experimental musicians, sound artists, video artists, and new media artists and thousands of audience members from around central Ohio and the midwestern region. Prior to landing at our current home, Frequency Fridays has taken place in several venues around Columbus, including Junctionview Studios, Wild Goose Creative, and It Looks Like Its Open.

Location

Performances will take place at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center second floor painting studio or the Old First Presbyterian Church (1101 Bryden Rd. Columbus 43205) unless otherwise indicated. Please refer to specific events on our calendar for additional event details.

All shows are video recorded and archived at our YouTube channel.

More about Frequency Fridays

Our Frequency Fridays series has been generously supported by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, the Ohio Arts Council, the Columbus Foundation, and, more recently, the National Endowment for the Arts and New Music USA. This season, shows will be held at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center and the Old First Presbyterian Church on the east side of the city. Our shows take place the first Friday of every month from October through June (except January), and feature a heady mix of local, regional, and “from afar” performers in various stages of their musical and artistic careers. To see the range of artists we have featured in our Frequency Fridays programming, please check out our series documentation in our gallery and our YouTube channel.

Frequency Fridays is by invitation only, and heavily curated by our staff, volunteers, and local experimental musicians and collaborators. However, we are always happy to book touring musicians and sound artists for stand-alone performances throughout the year, and it is not unheard of for us to invite performers to take part in Frequency Fridays who we have booked previously as part of a tour. If you have any questions, or if you are a touring artist and would like to perform in Columbus, please contact our executive director via email at alison@thefusefactory.org. Please note that our focus is *entirely* on experimentation (the widening and exploration of possibilities) and improvisation (real-time aesthetic risk-taking, flexibility, and sensitivity)! In other words, we are not interested in popular or mainstream art forms and will not book these kinds of projects.
