In part 2, we’ll talk about the use of controllers (both internal and external), MIDI (as it refers to Live), how to use a mouse or a basic keyboard controller to automate features inside of Live, and how to quantize and correct mistakes made while playing notes. This session will be great for those who have had stumbling blocks on getting things to talk to each other and using non-native synthesizers and effects in Ableton’s environment. We’ll cover:
- How to set up a keyboard through USB or MIDI to control an internal synthesizer or drum machine in live
- How to use a controller to change parameters in Live’s environment
- How to record automation in Live
- How Live works with VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plug-ins…and where to find free VST instruments and effects
- Recording a performance/editing MIDI notes in Live
- How to get Ableton Live to send MIDI notes to external synthesizers and machines
We’ll also look at the arrangement view, with a basic overview of how to make a ‘session’ turn into a ‘song.’
Workshop attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops with Ableton Live already installed. No previous experience with electronic music, composition, performance, or Ableton Live is required.
