Manabu ‘Gaku’ Kitada, clarinet/bass clarinet
Toru Nishijima, contrabass

Live performance at Bar Subterraneans, Shibuya Tokyo. September 18 2021.

About the artists:

Ayako Kanda, vocals

Ayako Kanda is an improvising performer whose medium is her voice. Low as an echo in a tunnel, then light as a child’s conversation; chasing the band one moment, and ringing out wild and alone the next, Ayako’s vocal performances encompass a kaleidoscopic range of expression. She made her debut as a performer during her time at art school, where she also began painting. Today she performs improvised live sets around Tokyo and worldwide. In 2016, she formed a band of local musicians in New York City to record her first album, “Antigravity Vacation.”

Manabu ‘Gaku’ Kitada, clarinet/bass clarinet

Kitada is a Tokyo-based Japanese clarinet player, composer, and improvisor. He learned basics of playing clarinet from a classical music player when he was in junior high school. Few years after that, he started playing Improvisational music. Improv has been the center of his musical concern since at that time. He visited NYC few times for joying the School of improvisational music. He met Tim Berne at the workshop. And after that he played with Tim Berne at NYC.

Toru Nishijima, Bassist/Composer

Nishijima started playing the violin at the age of five, and picked up the electric bass in high school. While he was familiar with classical music, he gradually began to listen to jazz and fusion music, and started playing the wood bass when he left for college. In 2018, he released his solo album “phenomenology”, which focuses on improvisation on the bass, and in recent years he has been actively performing free improvisation.
