About the workshop
Have you ever wanted to know or understand more about audio effects processing and DSP? Using presets or plugins in a DAW and want to dig deeper, or simply want to start taking sounds you find around the house and transform them? This workshop aims to help students understand a deeper approach to using effects such as Delay, Flange, Chorus, and others by building their own effects processors from the ground up. We will do this using the industry standard MAX programming environment, creating custom effects that can then be used to export files for use in any DAW. Max, also known as Max/MSP/Jitter, is a visual programming language for music and multimedia developed and maintained by San Francisco-based software company Cycling ’74.
About the instructor
Owen Hopper is a sound artist, composer, and researcher whose work focuses on fragile correlations between landscape and meaning. Much of his work meditates our relationship with technology and issues of modernity and acoustic ecology. Through ideas that encompass sound, digital media, field recordings, found objects, and loudspeaker arrays he often collaborates with visual artists, scientists, and engineers to develop pieces that seek to provoke thoughtful discussions around issues involving humans and the environment. His research explores these ideas as well as how technology shapes the meanings of culture and the ways we interact with art. His projects have been funded through grants from the Ohio Arts Council, The Greater Columbus Arts Council, The University of Cincinnati, as well as Otterbein University. His work has been performed at ICMC, The Electroacoustic Barn Dance, the West Fork New Music Festival, The Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, the Midwest Composers Symposium, and at various concerts in the Columbus and Cincinnati areas. He holds an MM in composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
