SUMMARY:June 2026 Frequency Fridays
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, June 5th\, we are thrilled and delighted to feature experimental electronic musician Alex Ruiz’ solo project Carnal Ex (MX)\, experimental electronic musician Bubba Fontaine (IND)\, improvisational musician Devin Sherman (PGH)\, and improvisational musician Gerard Cox (CMH). Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm sharp. $10.00 prepaid\, $15 at the door. \nSupporters of our 2025-2026 season include the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Columbus Foundation. \nAbout the artists: \nCarnal Ex is an electronic musician and visual artist from Mexico City. His work explores the integration of emerging technologies in multimodal interfaces between sound and image\, creating indeterminate audiovisual systems that emphasize deep listening. \nBubba Fontaine is an American experimental songwriter\, composer\, guitarist\, multimedia artist\, and maker from Indianapolis\, Indiana. His music is eclectic and sometimes\, deliberately\, a little bizarre. No single musical genre encapsulates the entire Fontaine catalog. Fontaine’s aural creations have been described or labeled as all of the following: experimental\, progressive fusion\, rock\, Avant-Garde chamber\, and ambient electronic music. The Fontaine musical ensemble changes frequently and is designed to shape-shift depending on the musical direction and requirements. More recent ensembles have included members of the Straight Up Chumps\, the Max Allen Band\, Lynzi Stringer\, Tracksuit Lyfestyle\, Ultravolt\, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra\, among others. Mixing and combining sounds and textures from various talented musicians from around the globe is the backbone of Bubba Fontaine. \n‘Devin’s mostly not blue’ is the stage name of Devin Sherman – a classically-trained guitarist turned improvising musician in the indie-jazz/experimental vein with flavors of funk\, folk\, and alternative music sprinkled in. His introspective\, tone-painting approach draws listeners in to examine the colors\, textures\, and stories that underly his improvisations. Some tunes sound like a musical Alexander Calder mobile and others splinter and split between jazz and bluegrass and blues. He explores forms and textures\, melodies and harmonies\, moods and vibes in real-time. He strives to capture sounds that intrigue and express real\, genuine\, human feelings. A few artist inspirations are Bill Frisell\, Julian Lage\, and Mary Halvorson. \nGerard Cox is a pianist\, trumpeter\, and percussionist from Columbus with a keen interest in musical surrealism and the percussive nature of the piano. Born to a piano teacher Mom and a jazz saxophone hobbyist father\, clear “rockstar” inclinations were shown at age 8 in an appearance as J.S. Bach at an OMTA music festival and at 10 as Billy Idol in a look-a-like contest for the national pop/rock magazine Star Hits. Cox developed a love for jazz in high school on through college\, studying both jazz piano and B3 organ. While initially taken with the straight-ahead jazz of Art Blakey and Clifford Brown\, he followed John Coltrane’s discography into his later period music and this proved to be the gateway for a fascination with free jazz and all kinds of other outsider/experimental music.

DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, May 1st\, we are thrilled and delighted to feature hybrid media artist Paul Catanese (NYC)\, new media artist/didgeridoo player John Hardin (CA)\, a duo between multi-instrumentalist/improviser Jules Ana (CMH) and new media artist CG Ryan (CMH)\, and improvisational musician Bryan Stewart (CMH). \nAbout the artists: \nPaul Catanese is a Hybrid Media Artist who blurs the lines between the fine\, performing\, and media arts through a wide array of artworks including installations\, performances\, videos\, experimental opera\, projections\, net.art\, virtual reality\, electronic artists books\, and print media. Catanese has exhibited at numerous institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art\, Chicago Cultural Center\, New Museum of Contemporary Art\, SFMOMA Artist’s Gallery\, La Villette\, China Academy of Art\, Frankston Art Center\, Carraigeworks\, Disjecta\, Terrain Biennial\, Stuttgart Filmwinter\, FILE\, New Forms Festival\, Ann Arbor Film Festival\, and the International Symposium on Electronic Art. He has been awarded residencies at the Institute for Electronic Art at Alfred University\, Kala Art Institute\, SPACES\, Signal Culture\, PLAYA\, Goldwell Open Air Museum\, and universities throughout the United States and abroad; commissions from Rhizome and Turbulence; and grants from the City of Chicago\, Illinois Arts Council\, and New York Foundation for the Arts. An Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellowship (2014) provided support for Visible From Space\, an exhibition seen by over 35\,000 visitors at the Chicago Cultural Center\, described in Furtherfield by Patrick Lichty as a hybrid drawing dirigible telepresence opera. Catanese was named the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence at Colgate University (2018-19) which culminated in an ensemble production of his multi-modal opera: Century of Progress / Sleep at the Ho-Tung Visualization Lab Planetarium and the publication of a studio recording on LP record. \nJohn Hardin plays didgeridoo and theremin simultaneously through a network of digital effects\, and controls a bank of audio samples he can trigger at will. These samples include field recordings\, excerpts of vintage media\, and candid interviews. With these elements\, Hardin sculpts a unique sound that transcends time as it flows organically through it\, like the endless dance of earth and water on a living planet shaped by unseen forces. \nSound artist Jules Ana reinterprets traditional koto music and creates original work that celebrates the unique sounds of a koto. She pursues “a symphony of noise” – using koto as the driver to layer melody with percussive sounds\, atonal bowing\, and electronic modulation. \nC.G. RYAN is a media artist and scenic designer who creates playful\, surreal imagery that she mixes in real time with live music to create vistas of inner and outer space\, layering tangibility with the imaginary. She holds an MFA in Visual Arts: New Media from CCAD\, and collaborates with musicians and directors to create transportive\, immersive experiences for audiences at live events and in theatrical productions.

His music grows from resonance\, memory\, the making/breaking of patterns\, and computer models of musical thought. Working between the concert stage\, the recording studio\, and the code box\, Sargent’s audio technology has been called “a veritable fountain of intensifying\, kaleidoscopic spumes” (Peter Margasak\, Bandcamp). Over the last decade\, his work has focused extensively on musical algorithms and real-time notation systems\, which can be heard in his compositions and technical collaborations with other artists. \nDani Dobkin is a sound artist\, composer\, and educator based in New York City\, Their work explores sound through modular synthesis\, ceramics\, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Their artistic practice often delves into themes of grief\, decay\, and ephemerality\, creating immersive sonic environments that emphasize physical\, kinetic\, and auditory experiences. They work extensively with handmade instruments\, live electronic improvisation\, and sound installations. \nShoko Nagai is a versatile musical artist who improvises and performs with world-renowned musicians on piano and accordion and composes original scores for films and live performances. As a teenager in her native Japan\, Nagai was trained on Yamaha’s electronic organ\, the “Electone\,” to perform popular music. Since moving to the U.S. from Japan and studying classical\, jazz music\, and compositions at Berklee\, she has adapted her mastery of the keyboard to prepared piano\, accordions\, and other keyboard instruments\, often inspired by the minimalist approach of composer Toru Takemitsu. Whether she is performing Klezmer\, Balkan or experimental music\, Nagai is a charismatic presence onstage\, who hypnotizes audiences with her intense focus and virtuoso sound. www.shokonagai.net \nAdam Crawley (crawlinggiants) is a composer\, performer\, dance accompanist\, educator\, and instrument builder from Muncie\, IN\, where on faculty at Ball State University in the Department of Theatre and Dance. SUMMARY:March 2026 Frequency Fridays
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, March 6th\, we are thrilled and delighted to feature the duo of trumpeter Kyle Quass (IN) and percussionist Julian Douglass (IN)\, experimental electronic musician Frederick Foxtrott (CMH)\, performance artist/multi-instrumentalist Nick Weckman (CMH)\, and guitarist LA Jenkins (CMH). \nAbout the artists: \nKyle Quass is a sound poet\, improviser and trumpet player who makes his home in Bloomington\, IN. Julian Douglas is a percussionist and composer of contemporary world music and a founding member of the world percussion ensemble Rhythm Quest. Influences include traditions from the African diaspora\, Asia\, and the Middle East\, but his focus has been on the creation of new music that seeks to honor the beauty and brilliance of the world’s traditions with an eye toward creativity and innovation \nFrederick Foxtrott is a modular synthesist and multi instrumentalist living and working in Columbus\, OH. He likes to think of his music as a collection of hyper melodic fugues that seamlessly blend danceable textures with glitched chromatic figures for a rich maximalist experience. \nPerformance artist/multi-instrumentalist Nick “Njick” Weckman has a zest for life and is excited to share a new sound that stems from his love for the avant garde as he constructs a vocal sound fortress of made up languages that integrate with dance and story-telling. \nL.A. Jenkins is a modern jazz guitarist and composer. His relaxed approach to his art is always about the music and the collaboration he forges with other like minded musicians. Originally a self-taught guitarist\, he eventually studied music composition-specifically the harmolodic approach to song composition ala Ornette Coleman. His compositional work follows in the legacy of Anthony Braxton\, Bill Frisell\, Bill Laswell\, Leroy Jenkins\, Ornette Coleman and David Torn. He wishes “to advance the ideal of artistic freedom being unhindered by cultural assumptions about the individual and enforced as limiting expectations as it relates to categories and genre.” Thus he dips his “toe” (so to speak) into many styles of creative music. L. A’s\, current interest is playing in the genre of modern jazz/free improvisation\, ambient/ experimental\, avant-garde\, and film compositions. L.A. has collaborated with percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani\, bassist Tom Abbs\, and saxophonist Michael Cary/ Gary Thompson\, drummer Ryan Jewell and multi- instruments Hasan Abdur-Razzaq to name a few notable collaborations.
