SUMMARY:December 2026 Frequency Fridays
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, December 4\, we are thrilled and delighted to feature modular synthesist Joe Arias’ solo project Salem Soundwaves (NY)\, experimental/jazz improv trio We Take Requests (PGH)\, web artist/composer Treya Nash (CMH)\, and a duo between experimental multi-instrumentalist/improviser Caleb Miller (CMH) and experimental electronic musician David Reed (CMH). Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm sharp. $10.00 prepaid\, $15 at the door. \nSupporters of our 2026-2027 season include the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, the Columbus Foundation\, and the Johnstone Fund for New Music. \nAbout the artists: \nSalem Soundwaves is a living love letter to audio hardware and experimental improvisation based in Long Island\, NY and deeply entrenched in its alternative music scene. Custom built modular synth systems live at the heart of their setup\, with an ever-morphing retinue of tape machines\, noise boxes\, and traditional instruments making appearances alongside. \nWe Take Requests is a trio comprised of Jason Belcher (electric piano / valve trombone)\, Luke Farkas (saxophones)\, and Eli Weidman (drums and percussion). \nTreya Nash is a composer and web artist. A staple of her practice is the creation of web apps designed for audience performance with cellphones. Her participatory approach extends into her acoustic music\, which invites audiences to play with physical objects. Treya is Visiting Assistant Professor of Composition at the Ohio State University.  \nThe inspiration behind the Reed/Miller duo was a mutual desire to collaborate with another musician whose sound and approach they deeply admire.  \nCaleb Miller is a musician and educator in Columbus\, OH. His work mostly focuses on eclectic-midwestern perspectives surrounding creative\, new music and projects. In addition to his personally lead projects (Gault\, pincer\, Here Here) Caleb plays\, writes and subs in many jazz-adjacent projects (Favorite Daughter\, Yumbambe\, Troy Kunkler 4tet)\, songs-oriented groups (Zack Kouns and His Insatiable Orchestra\, Carr and Company\, Confusions\, Francis Bacon Band)\, contemporary classical settings (dance accompanist\, classical pianist) and other settings (Taylor K Conrad\, solo work\, Sun Trash\, audio work\, VMR\, music videos\, album artwork). As output he is most interested in productions that show a true synthesis of perspectives\, sounds\, individuals and communities. Music and projects that strive for some form of “newness” regardless of the setting\, people or situation. Caleb also currently operates the Columbus-based recording label Very Much Recordings and teaches in the American public (!) school system. \nSome people equate David Reed’s solo project Envenomist (CMH) with science fiction film scores; others envision solitary nocturnal travels through bleak urban settings. A fundamental strength of Envenomist is that these illusory backdrops remain open to interpretation. Taking inspiration from industrial\, ambient\, and the kosmische scenes along with altered states of consciousness\, the oceanic abyss\, and deep space\, Reed has been producing desolate soundscapes under the Envenomist moniker since 2005.
