SUMMARY:Performance: Almost Music
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Wednesday\, September 30 we are proud to present avant-garde improvisational trio Almost Music (NYC/PA)\, featuring saxophonist Jack Wright\, double bassist Evan Lipson\, and trumpeter Jonah Gelbart. Opening for Almost Music is percussionist/improviser Troy Kunkler (CMH). Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm. Performance will take place at Old First (1101 Bryden Road 43205). $8.00 online\, $10 at the door. \nAbout the artists: \nJack Wright (b. 1942) is a musician described as playing “post-electronic saxophone\, and dedicated to to free playing since 1979. Described thirty years ago as an “undergrounder by design\,” he is a veteran improviser based mainly in Philadelphia. He has played mostly on tour through the US and Europe since the early 80s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. Now at 83 he is still the “Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation\,” as guitarist Davey Williams called him in the 80s\, on the road as much as ever. He continues to inspire players outside music-school careerdom\, playing sessions with visiting and resident players old and new. He’s said to have the widest vocabulary of any saxophonist\, including leaping pitches\, punchy\, precise timing\, sharp and intrusive multiphonics\, surprising gaps of silence\, and obscene animalistic sounds. Apart from interviews\, for a true assessment of his and his partners music and for links to his writings (including The Free Musics) go here: Spring Garden Music. \nEvan Lipson (b. 1981) has lived with the incurable disease of music since early adolescence\, seeking the liminal realms in which intellect and instinct\, history and myth\, and creative and destructive force intersect. Drawn towards aberrant perspectives at an early age\, his formative activities were primarily rooted in extreme and discordant forms stemming from various traditions of “underground” and ancient musics. He may or may not have some degree of affiliation with Rev. Fred Lane in addition to a social scientific think tank known as MEINSCHAFT. \nJonah Gelbart is an improviser\, composer\, system-builder based in the greater Philadelphia area\, playing trumpet and shofar. He plays everything from classical\, straight-ahead jazz\, new music\, to free improvisation. He is currently a member of the Hansen-Protasi Group\, the Kitchen Sink ensemble\, the (Toshi) Makihara/Allen/Gelbart Trio\, and various other temporary musical arrangements. DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, October 2\, we are thrilled and delighted to feature saxophonist/composer Caroline Davis (NYC)\, experimental musician/mixed-media artist Christa Ebert’s solo project Uno Lady (CLE)\, experimental electronic musician Adam Crawley’s solo project crawlinggiants (IND)\, and electronic musician/modular synthesist Eden Grey (CMH) w/visuals by ElectronFlow (CMH). Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm sharp. $10.00 prepaid\, $15 at the door. \nSupporters of our 2026-2027 season include the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, the Columbus Foundation\, and the Johnstone Fund for New Music. \nAbout the artists: \nCaroline Davis is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist\, composer\, and activist\, whose work is driven by a desire for connection and a belief in music’s capacity to expand listeners’ ears\, minds\, and hearts. A 2025 Guggenheim Fellow in Composition\, she is the recipient of the DownBeat Critics Poll Alto Saxophone Rising Star Award\, as well as fellowships from NYFA\, the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Her residencies include MacDowell\, The Jazz Gallery\, Civitella\, and the Rockefeller Estate\, and she has served as a mentor for New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. \nDavis’s work spans a wide range of creative contexts\, rooted in improvisation and social inquiry. She has released eight albums as a leader and collaborated with artists such as Allison Miller\, Lee Konitz\, John Zorn\, Angelica Sanchez\, The Femme Jam\, Miles Okazaki\, Nicole Mitchell\, Rajna Swaminathan\, and Matt Mitchell. Her most recent release\, Portals\, explores themes of grief and memory\, and she is also a contributor to Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards\, a landmark collection of jazz compositions by female-identifying composers. \nIn addition to her work as a performer and composer\, Davis is a dedicated educator\, teaching courses on gender in jazz at The New School and maintaining a private studio at the Manhattan School of Music. Her artistic practice is deeply intertwined with advocacy\, including work for gender equity through This Is A Movement\, and for current and formerly incarcerated individuals through initiatives such as Justice for Keith LaMar\, Freer Records\, Keys Beats Bars\, and Creative Beyond Incarceration. \nCaroline Davis’ solo performances are chosen spontaneously\, given the atmosphere of the room and the people present. She explores sonic textures offered by interactive technologies\, sharing sounds from the saxophone that she considers to be distinctive and quirky. She makes use of Pure Data patches developed by the open source community surrounding the Organelle (the technobear\, shreeswifty\, critterandguitari\, tony j morton\, nobuyasu sakonda\, soxsa\, varicela\, nicky-system\, samesimilar\, and chrisk). The music during this performance will pull from Caroline’s recent solo album\, Fallows\, created during a time of rest on land in Ucross Wyoming. bell hooks was a constant source of inspiration during this time\, through the following ideas: love as a practice of freedom\, radical openness\, maintenance of commitment\, using community as a means of escape\, belief in one’s capacity to transform\, what it means to listen\, and eliminating elimination. \nUno Lady is the musical persona of Cleveland\, Ohio-based musician and mixed-media artist Christa Ebert. She creates dream-like sonic worlds using her voice\, nature sounds\, and electronic tools. Performing as a one-woman choir\, she layers live-looped vocals and ethereal tones to create immersive compositions. Christa also creates nature-inspired stop-motion music videos that explores our connection to the natural world. Explore her releases at https://unolady.com/albums/. \nHer work has been supported by the Ohio Arts Council\, Creative Impact Fund\,  Akron Soul Train\, and numerous artist residencies and fellowships with Bloedel Reserve in Washington\, Chulitna Lodge in Alaska\, The Ellis-Beauregard Foundation in Maine\, Foundation House in Connecticut\, and Chateau Orquevaux in France. \nAdam Crawley (crawlinggiants) is a composer\, performer\, dance accompanist\, educator\, and instrument builder from Muncie\, IN\, where on faculty at Ball State University in the Department of Theatre and Dance. Crawley works extensively in music for dance including the American Dance Festival and Bates Dance Festival as well as composing and performing for choreographers and improvisors in many settings. crawlinggiants is focused around but not limited to creating music with modular systems built by hand by Crawley\, who has always enjoyed building and modifying musical instruments and using any objects at hand to produce sound.  \nEden Grey\, the artistic alias of Dr. Chelsea Bruno\, is an innovative electronic musician and modular synthesist renowned for crafting immersive\, evolving sonic landscapes. Blending deep ambient textures with complex\, leftfield rhythmic structures\, her distinct sound world bridges vintage-style electronic music with modern electronica. Grounded in extensive piano training from her youth\, she went on to earn a PhD in Music Composition from the Royal Holloway\, University of London. Beyond her solo studio work and consistent album releases\, she is highly active in the synthesis community as an active author for the German publication beat.de and the organizer of CV FREQS\, an international event network for hardware synthesis enthusiasts. \nElectronFlow is a visual artist working primarily with analog video synthesis and experimental electronics. Their work explores the hidden fundamentals of electronic images\, using waveforms\, scanning signals\, and video standards as creative material. Rather than starting with a specific subject\, they let the synthesizer and the electronics guide the work; creating shifting fields of color\, texture\, and movement. They are interested not only in what these systems can produce\, but in how they work\, how they can be pushed beyond their intended use\, and how the knowledge behind them can be preserved and passed on. Their practice is an ongoing exploration of a niche but important part of electronic and visual history.
