Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm sharp. $10.00 prepaid\, $15 at the door. \nSupporters of our 2025-2026 season include the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Columbus Foundation. \nAbout the artists: \nKyle Quass is a sound poet\, improviser and trumpet player who makes his home in Bloomington\, IN. Julian Douglas is a percussionist and composer of contemporary world music and a founding member of the world percussion ensemble Rhythm Quest. Influences include traditions from the African diaspora\, Asia\, and the Middle East\, but his focus has been on the creation of new music that seeks to honor the beauty and brilliance of the world’s traditions with an eye toward creativity and innovation \nFrederick Foxtrott is a modular synthesist and multi instrumentalist living and working in Columbus\, OH. He likes to think of his music as a collection of hyper melodic fugues that seamlessly blend danceable textures with glitched chromatic figures for a rich maximalist experience. \nPerformance artist/multi-instrumentalist Nick “Njick” Weckman has a zest for life and is excited to share a new sound that stems from his love for the avant garde as he constructs a vocal sound fortress of made up languages that integrate with dance and story-telling. \nL.A. Jenkins is a modern jazz guitarist and composer. His relaxed approach to his art is always about the music and the collaboration he forges with other like minded musicians. Originally a self-taught guitarist\, he eventually studied music composition-specifically the harmolodic approach to song composition ala Ornette Coleman. His compositional work follows in the legacy of Anthony Braxton\, Bill Frisell\, Bill Laswell\, Leroy Jenkins\, Ornette Coleman and David Torn. He wishes “to advance the ideal of artistic freedom being unhindered by cultural assumptions about the individual and enforced as limiting expectations as it relates to categories and genre.” Thus he dips his “toe” (so to speak) into many styles of creative music. L. A’s\, current interest is playing in the genre of modern jazz/free improvisation\, ambient/ experimental\, avant-garde\, and film compositions. L.A. has collaborated with percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani\, bassist Tom Abbs\, and saxophonist Michael Cary/ Gary Thompson\, drummer Ryan Jewell and multi- instruments Hasan Abdur-Razzaq to name a few notable collaborations.

SUMMARY:April 2026 Frequency Fridays
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, April 3rd\, we are thrilled and delighted to feature the duo of composer Matt Sargent (NY) and sound artist Dani Dobkin (NYC)\, composer/improviser/multi-instrumentalist Shoko Nagai (NYC)\, experimental electronic musician Rob Funkhouser (IN)\, and experimental electronic musicians David Reed and Ty Owen’s duo project Fatal Gaze (CMH). \nAbout the artists: \nMatt Sargent is a composer\, guitarist\, recording engineer\, and music technology specialist based in upstate New York\, where he is an assistant professor of music at Bard College. His music grows from resonance\, memory\, the making/breaking of patterns\, and computer models of musical thought. Working between the concert stage\, the recording studio\, and the code box\, Sargent’s audio technology has been called “a veritable fountain of intensifying\, kaleidoscopic spumes” (Peter Margasak\, Bandcamp). Over the last decade\, his work has focused extensively on musical algorithms and real-time notation systems\, which can be heard in his compositions and technical collaborations with other artists. \nDani Dobkin is a sound artist\, composer\, and educator based in New York City\, Their work explores sound through modular synthesis\, ceramics\, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Their artistic practice often delves into themes of grief\, decay\, and ephemerality\, creating immersive sonic environments that emphasize physical\, kinetic\, and auditory experiences. They work extensively with handmade instruments\, live electronic improvisation\, and sound installations. \nShoko Nagai is a versatile musical artist who improvises and performs with world-renowned musicians on piano and accordion and composes original scores for films and live performances. As a teenager in her native Japan\, Nagai was trained on Yamaha’s electronic organ\, the “Electone\,” to perform popular music. Since moving to the U.S. from Japan and studying classical\, jazz music\, and compositions at Berklee\, she has adapted her mastery of the keyboard to prepared piano\, accordions\, and other keyboard instruments\, often inspired by the minimalist approach of composer Toru Takemitsu. Whether she is performing Klezmer\, Balkan or experimental music\, Nagai is a charismatic presence onstage\, who hypnotizes audiences with her intense focus and virtuoso sound. www.shokonagai.net \nRob Funkhouser is a composer\, performer\, and instrument builder who can never quite sit still. His work is concerned with ideas of place\, memory\, and pattern and he is interested in interrogating the interstitial spaces between established genres. He holds an M.M. from Butler University in Music Composition\, and most recently completed Peace of Mind\, Speed of Thought for Classical Music Indy. He has released projects through various labels in three different countries\, but finds his home turf on Auris Apothecary and Medium Sound. His current projects include an ongoing series of recordings and writing under the title Walking Music\, building a new set of instruments in collaboration with artist Justin Cooper\, and ongoing work on new performance tools for music and installations. In 2020\, he began a long-term living residency with Big Car as part of their APLR program. He also serves as Education Manager for the Rhythm Discovery Center\, where he runs public programming for schools and community members. He has collaborated with diverse groups including Forward Motion\, Los Angeles Percussion Quartet\, So Percussion\, No Exit Theater\, and Chicago-based director Ryan Gleason. \nDavid Reed and Ty Owen combine analog synthesis and computer based sound manipulations as Fatal Gaze\, projecting an enveloping field of dark lingering gloom inspired by horror films\, music concrete\, and the anxiety of the modern world.
