SUMMARY:October 2022 Frequency Fridays
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, October 7th\, we are delighted to present audiovisual performance collective MSHR (NYC/PDX)\, experimental electroacoustic musician/instrument inventor Tim Kaiser (MN)\, electronic experimental musician Bob Bucko (IA)\, and experimental electronic musician/composer Eden Grey (CMH). Doors 7:00pm\, show begins at 7:30pm sharp. $9.25 prepaid ($8 + $1.25 TicketTailor processing fee)\, $10 per ticket at the door. \nCovid protocols: All attendees are strongly encouraged wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. We will provide masks at the door. We kindly request that audience members refrain from bringing food and drinks into the space. \nSupporters of our 2022-2023 season include the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, New Music USA\, and the Columbus Foundation. \nAbout the artists: \nMSHR builds and explores systems composed of sound\, light\, sculpture\, software\, circuitry and human presence. Their practice is a self-transforming entity with its outputs patched into its inputs\, expressing its form through interactive installations\, virtual environments and live improvisations that integrate interface design with generative systems and a distinctive formalist approach. MSHR was established as an art collective in 2011 by Brenna Murphy and Birch Cooper. Their name is a modular acronym\, designed to hold varied ideas over time. \nTim Kaiser is well known in the atmospheric experimental music scene for his blending of acousto-electric contraptions and Frankenstein electronics to create ethereal\, layered drones. His sonic landscapes have been called “experiments in adventurous art” and “eclectic genius” by the likes of Make Magazine\, Wired\, the New Art Examiner and the Associated Press. Mr. Kaiser was featured on the PBS program MakeTV and has headlined numerous experimental music festivals in the US. Kaiser commands his creations with simple sweeps of his hands\, willing sounds into existence. He has scored films\, been featured on PBS as well as in magazines\, and has toured extensively. How he gets by airport security with his devices is anyone’s guess\, but his hand-built instruments are as alluring as the sounds they make. Kaiser has been a founding contributor and champion of the Weirdo Industrial Complex for more than 30 years. \nBob Bucko\, Jr. resides and records in Dubuque\, Iowa\, a quarter mile from the Mississippi River. Relentlessly touring and uncompromisingly prolific\, according to Joshua Tabbia (Already Dead Tapes & Records)\, Bucko “has spent the last several years establishing himself as a widely varied experimental artist. His output is consistently engaging and eclectic\, while somehow never pulling the same punch twice.” Bucko also performs with the improvised drone collective Venereal Crush\, free improv duo Sex Funeral\, electro pop outfit Arc Numbers\, alternative country rockers Dirty Swears\, and is a recurring guest with Milwaukee’s rockist free jazz outfit One More Final I Need You. Bucko also regularly collaborates with many artists across genres\, including Alexander Adams (Galaaxu)\, Stuart Dahlquist (Asva\, Burning Witch)\, rapper Darko the Super (The Hell Hole Store)\, and experimental guitarist Storm Ross. \nEden Grey (aka Dr. Chelsea Bruno) is a music composer\, producer\, artist\, and founder of. @cv_freqs. modular synthesis events.

SUMMARY:In-person workshop: Intro to Modular Synthesis
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the modular synthesizer. In addition to learning about how the modular synthesizer works\, they will learn the basics of what they will need to start building a synthesizer of their own. The instructor will be bringing her own modular synthesizer for participants to try\, and they will have the opportunity to create their own digital sounds to save on a USB drive and take home. Workshop requirements: No previous experience with synthesizers or any musical instrument is necessary. Participants must bring their own USB drive. \nAbout the instructor: Electronic music composer Dr. Chelsea Bruno has been composing and releasing electronic music since 2008 under the artist alias Eden Grey. Her father’s work as a piano technician and rebuilder inspired her to compose at an early age and pursue a career in music. \nSeven years of lessons in classical piano had a major outcome on her aesthetic. First composing songs on the piano in her teenage years\, she began using a USB/MIDI keyboard at age 18 to begin recording electronic music in Ableton Live. She pursued an undergraduate degree at the University of Miami in visual art\, sculpture\, performance art\, poetry\, and literature\, and first began to participate in electronic music seminar classes. \nChelsea started her masters’ degree in Music Technology at Florida International University in January of 2011\, which opened her world to the history of electronic music composers and led to her first patching experiments\, creating algorithmic compositions using Max/MSP. Her Masters’ thesis is titled “Vocal Synthesis and Deep Listening”. \nShe was a recipient of the Presidents’ Innovation Award to attend the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention in Anaheim\, California in January of 2013\, where she first discovered the Eurorack format of modular synthesis. She began working on her own custom Eurorack later that year during her graduate internship with 4MS Company in Portland\, Oregon\, where she learned to build and play Eurorack synthesizers. \nShe began her PhD in Music Composition at Royal Holloway\, University of London in September 2014 and was focusing on collaborative and interdisciplinary sound art performance and fixed media projects. She was formally awarded in June of 2020 with her dissertation titled: “A Portfolio of Compositions Exploring Modular Synthesis in Electronic Music”. \nWhile conducting her independent research on modular synthesizers and electronic music\, she performed in London\, Wales and throughout Europe\, including events in Slovenia\, Sweden\, Paris\, SuperBooth 2017 and 2018 in Berlin and Hamburg in 2019 as part of the ePhil Electronic Music Series. She showed her custom built modular synthesizer at Synthfest UK in Sheffield in 2016 and 2018. She also established the CV FREQS modular meet / concert event series in London during her PhD research from 2016-2019. In this time she organized 12 events at different venues in London including the Waterloo House of Vans Skate Park and the Iklectik Art Lab venue in Lower Marsh\, central London. \nShe continues hosting the CV FREQS podcast series\, interviewing electronic music artists and module manufacturers. Most recently\, she performed at the Superbooth22 Synthesizer trade show in Berlin\, Germany\, May 13 2022.

SUMMARY:Performance: Kane/Lisk duo + Sweet Teeth + Micro
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, October 21st\, we are proud to present the Kane/Lisk duo\, comprising of improvisor and electro acoustic multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Kane (MA) and drummer Tracy Lisk (PA)\, art-pop/post-punk duo Sweet Teeth (CMH)\, and electronica duo Micro (CMH). Doors 7:00pm\, show begins at 7:30pm. Performance will take place in the Cultural Arts Center 3rd floor classroom. $6.19 prepaid ($5 + $1.19 TicketTailor processing fee)\, $8-$10 at the door. \nAbout the artists: \nDedicated improvisor and electro acoustic pioneer\, Bonnie Kane’s music lives equally in the avant-garde\, hard core and psychedelic arenas. Integrating saxophone\, flute\, feedback and electronics\, her work travels through genres of noise\, free jazz and improv\, psych rock\, jam band\, and bio-composition\, manipulating sound into magic. Her work is not for the timid! \nTracy Lisk is a drummer\, painter\, and curator who resides in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Although she has a reputation as a percussionist\, a large amount of her creative output has been visual art\, which has been a strong source for her free compositions on the drum set. \nBad girls of Columbus artpop and nice guys of Columbus punk\, Sweet Teeth make raw\, frantic music for the genre-curious. Lopsided waltzes\, electronic chamber punk and disintegrating psych soundscapes lay the background for intensely emotional stories of relationships with others\, the self and the world.
