She gathers field recordings and uses them to re-create sonic environments. She also creates sound with hand built instruments\, electric cello\, amplified objects\, circuits\, synthesizers\, reel to reel tape machines\, and voice. Her work explores interchangeability\, electronic intelligence\, the human mechanism\, perceptive states of consciousness\, and the empirical force of nature. She is interested in the psychological effect of sound and works to heighten our potential for “hearing” through spatial\, psychic\, and temporal based explorations. \nCarbon is currently part of music ensembles HEVM\, and Metalux. Past collaborations include Aki Onda\, Azita Youssefi\, C. Spencer Yeh\, Charlemagne Palestine\, Evan Parker\, Lesley Flanigan\, Maria Chavez\, Mario Diaz de Leon\, Okkyung Lee\, Richard Garet\, Shelley Hirsch\, Tony Conrad\, Tristan Perich Wolf Eyes\, and Zach Layton. She co-founded West Nile\, a DIY performance space in Brooklyn from 2006-2012\, which hosted sound artists spanning the world. She has done residencies at Q-02 (BR)\, EMS (SE)\, Issue Project Room (NY)\, The Clocktower Gallery (NY)\, and Roulette\, (NY). She has composed work for The String Orchestra of Brooklyn. \nLisa Miralia has been a promoter and performer in the NE Ohio freeform and experimental sound communities since 2003. She composes for and performs in a number of projects both solo (as Baat) and in collaboration with others involving electro-acoustic improv\, experimental electronics\, noise\, drone\, and dark ambient sound\, and has released several recordings and contributed to multiple collaboration and compilation releases. She will celebrate her 7th anniversary of hosting the Mysterious Black Box radio show on WCSB 89.3fm this year\, and was featured in the City/Ruins documentary about the NE Ohio noise and industrial music scenes. Lisa lives in Lakewood\, and is grateful for open-minded neighbors who don’t mind the strange musical and anti-musical sounds emanating from her abode. \nRobert Turman is an experimental/noise musician who was originally based in San Diego\, and now resides in Oberlin\, Ohio. He first rose to prominence as part of NON\, collaborating with Boyd Rice on the classic 1977 single ‘Mode of Infection’/’Knife Ladder’\, before leaving to pursue his own more expansive solo vision. \nUnquiet Slumbers is a collaboration between Nathan Leaflight (Shred Van Winkle) and Brian Werstler (Young Herkimer\, Abgyhr). Every show is entirely improvised and usually has a guest musician.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Make an arduino etch-a-sketch
DESCRIPTION:[NOTE: This is a 3-session workshop. The first session takes place from 10am – 2pm on Saturday\, May 12. The second and third sessions also take place from 10am – 2pm\, on May 19th and May 26th.] \nIn this beginner-level workshop\, participants will create a toy that functions like an etch-a-sketch\, in that this toy draws with the help of an arduino microcontroller and two stepper motors. In the process\, participants will learn how stepper motors work\, and how they can be controlled with an arduino. They will also learn the basics of microcontrollers\, and how to create simple arduino sketches. This workshop is made possible with support from the Ohio Arts Council. \nAbout the Instructors\nDr. Alison Colman’s first venture into new media and digital art was as an undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon University. She continued on this path as a freelance computer animator and graduate student at The Ohio State University\, where she received her MA and Ph.D. Most of her coursework was through the Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design at The Ohio State University\, where she developed a strong interest in 3D animation\, digital art\, cyberculture studies\, art criticism\, and education. She has published scholarly articles on digital art and theory in journals such as Visual Arts Research\, Studies in Art Education\, and the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education\, written artist reviews for the Tate Gallery Online and Furtherfield.com\, and has lectured on digital art and art criticism nationally and internationally. Her work has also been screened at Siggraph\, the Parsons School of Art and Design\, and the Big Muddy Film Festival. \nAfter teaching in the School of Art at Ohio University\, Athens from 2002-2007\, Dr. Colman founded the Fuse Factory Electronic and Digital Arts\, where she has served as its founding director up to the present. Under her direction\, the Fuse Factory has served hundreds of new media and sound artists and experimental electronic musicians from around the U.S. and Ohio\, along with thousands of people around central Ohio\, through its performances\, exhibitions\, and workshops. \nJesse Hemminger is a true renaissance man\, jack of all trades master of none. Jesse received his BFA in Art and Technology from OSU in 2001 and his MFA in Public Art from the Bauhaus University Weimar\, Germany\, in 2008. He is also a self taught computer programmer and when Jesse is not at his day job programming databases and websites you can find him building Sauerkraut Powered Robots or making Glowie Monsters at his studio at ILLIO.

SUMMARY:June 2018 Frequency Fridays: Witches of Malibu (LAX) + Tashi Dorji (NC) + Ka Baird (NYC) + Jeff Chenault (CMH)/Knox Mitchell (DET)
DESCRIPTION:Our June 2018 Frequency Fridays show features Skott Rusch’s noise/drone solo project Witches of Malibu (LAX)\, experimental guitarist Tashi Dorji (NC)\, multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Ka Baird (NYC)\, and experimental electronic musician Jeff Chenault’s solo project Central Inhabitants (CMH). Date: Friday\, June 1 2018. Location: It Looks Like It’s Open (13 E. Tulane Rd.\, 43202). Admission: $10\, $15 for 2. Doors open 8pm. BYOB\, all ages. Our Frequency Fridays 2017-2018 season is supported by grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAbout the performers:\nTashi Dorji grew up in Bhutan\, on the eastern side of the Himalayas. Residing in Asheville since 2000 and soaking up a vast array of music. Along the way\, Dorji developed a playing style unbound by tradition\, yet with a direct line to intuitive artistry. His recordings feature improvisations that spasmodically grow along tangential\, surprising paths. All references break loose during a composition\, as Dorji keys into his own inner world. His compositions drag the listener into a labyrinth of warbling tones\, where each sound seems to jump out and replace the eerie silence that would otherwise occupy the atmosphere. The textures remain sustained in the reverberation as the vibration of the strings dwindle and ascend. After a handful of releases on various labels since 2009\, Dorji presented his debut LP on Hermit Hut\, the label created by Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) in 2014. And since Tashi has released music both as a soloist\, and with duo projects\, notably with percussionist Tyler Damon and MANAS (w/ Thom Nguyen) on labels like Bathetic Records\, Cabin Floor Esoterica\, Blue Tapes\, Marmara Records\, Feeding Tubes\, UNROCK\, VDSQ\, MIE\, Ultra Violet Light\, Family Vineyard and Astral Spirits. \nKa Baird is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist living and working in NYC. She is one of the founding and continuing members of the long running avant psych project Spires That In The Sunset Rise. Since relocating to NYC in November 2014\, she has set off in numerous directions apart from Spires with new collaborations as well as honing in on her solo work. She is interested specifically in performance/sound as a means to break reoccurring thought patterns and create passages into pure energy potential. \nKa has toured both nationally and internationally with performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago)\, MoMA PS1 (Brooklyn)\, Roulette Intermedium (Brooklyn)\, Issue Project Room (Brooklyn)\, Fridman Gallery\, Cafe OTO (London)\, and numerous festival appearances with Spires including TUSK (Newcastle\, UK)\, Incubate (Tilburg\, Netherlands)\, and Festival Of Endless Gratitude (Copenhagen\, DK) and is currently an Artist-In-Residence at Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn\, NY. \nJeff Chenault is a non-musician who has been recording in Columbus since 1983. He is a cassette culture guru who has released music on his Exoteque Music cassette label for just as long. An early pioneer in the Columbus electronic music scene\, his many musical projects include 10-Speed Guillotine\, Central Inhabitants\, Resonance and The Weird Lovemakers. He is a true underground artist who also writes books and releases rare exotica music in his spare time. \nWitches of Malibu is the previously anonymous noise project of Richard Skott Rusch. Originally from Port Huron Michigan\, Skott has been making noise for over 35 years. From his Punk band in 1979\, to moving on to the “more punk” sound of Industrial music and recording under the name Screw Machine from ‘81-’82. In 1982 he co-founded the pioneering American Industrial band Hunting Lodge and it’s label S/M Operations. In the mid ‘90’s Skott relocated to Los Angeles and joined the space rock band Farflung. Skott’s guitar treatments can be heard on LA’s ECOLi and Baldylocks releases as well as Lydia Lunch’s ‘Champagne\,cocaine and nicotine stains’ release. He has toured and recorded with Nik Turner (Hawkwind) and basement jammed with Hans Joachim Roedelius (Cluster) and Helios Creed (Chrome). \nRecording under the moniker Witches of Malibu began in 2012. WoM has released multiple tapes and vinyl releases including collab releases with folkcore artist Amps for Christ and noise legend Bastard Noise. “Witches of Malibu is a project comprised of violently psychedelic electronics\, rhythm\, noise and the American industrial power of suggestion through meditation and noise mongering. A concept only concerned with unlocking the ‘Hidden Secrets’ of deep space sonic exploration and mind bending psychotronics.” – Witches of Malibu
