Our Frequency Fridays 2017-2018 season is supported by grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAbout the performers:\nAva Mendoza is a Brooklyn-based guitarist\, singer\, songwriter and composer. Born in 1983\, she started performing her own music\, and as a sidewoman and collaborator in many different projects\, as soon as she was old enough to get into 18+ venues. As a guitarist\, Mendoza has received acclaim for her technique and viscerality. Her most ongoing work is as leader of experimental rock band Unnatural Ways\, and as a solo performer on guitar/voice. In any context she is committed to bringing expressivity\, energy and a wide sonic range to the music. Mendoza has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and recorded or performed with musicians including Carla Bozulich\, Fred Frith\, Mick Barr\, Nels Cline\, Jon Irabagon\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Tune-Yards\, the Violent Femmes\, Mike Watt\, and more. Recordings are available on labels Tzadik\, Weird Forest\, Clean Feed\, NotTwo\, Resipiscent\, and New Atlantis. Friendly critics have quoted: “It’s… Ava Mendoza’s deconstructing of blues and punk into brutal shredfests that’s causing a ruckus in NYC’s DIY hubs” (Brad Cohan\, Noisey.Vice). “A wizard on a semi-circle of effects pedals\, but… equally adept with FX-less technique\,” (Lars Gotrich\, NPR). She was featured as one of Guitar World‘s “10 Female Guitarists You Should Know”. \nKristen Ban Drake performs as Ann B Klorox\, a one woman band of Voice\, Vowel\, Nostril & Analog Synthesizer & other ready noisemakers categories. \nColumbus\, Ohio-based guitarist Mike Shiflet started Gameboy Records in the late 1990s\, releasing limited tapes\, 7″s\, and CD-Rs by dozens of noise and experimental artists\, including John Wiese\, Cock E.S.P.\, Lasse Marhaug\, Sudden Infant\, and Crank Sturgeon. Shiflet’s myriad recordings and performances explored harsh noise and drone\, often focusing on high frequencies. He joined violinist C. Spencer Yeh’s ensemble Burning Star Core in 2004\, appearing on several of the group’s recordings\, including Operator Dead… Post Abandoned and Papercuts Theater. Shiflet relocated to Japan in 2006\, continuing to operate Gameboy Records until 2008\, when he moved back to America. He released collaborations and splits with a number of artists\, including Aaron Dilloway\, Daniel Menche\, Keith Fullerton Whitman\, and Ryan Jewell\, and released a pair of solo albums on Type\, 2011′s Sufferers and 2012′s Merciless. He returned to Type in 2015 with his most atmospheric\, melodic album to date\, Awake\, a collaboration with Rhode Island-based High Aura’d. \nInspired by a wide range of music\, Istvan Medgyesi‘s sound echoes of an array of American musical traditions intertwined with modal explorations and occasional forays into noise and drone.

SUMMARY:Intro to Film Scoring with Ava Mendoza
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop\nThis workshop by guitarist/composer/songwriter Ava Mendoza will delve into different approaches to scoring film. A score can be either live or recorded\, and we’ll explore both of these. Conventionally\, music/sound can “tell” the viewer what is about to happen in a film or what they should feel in a given scene; the score in this sense highlights the narrative of a film. But it can also focus on more abstract elements like color\, mood\, pacing of cuts\, and composition of shots. Music can be accompaniment to a film that takes the foreground\, or the two can cooperate and complement each other as equals. What effect do these different approaches have on the film\, the score\, and the viewer/listener? \nFree improvisation\, structured improv\, and written/composed sound-making are each vital musical tools. At their fundamental level\, once understood these tools can be used by anyone\, regardless of level\, who can make a peep! We’ll look at how to use these tools in the context of film scoring\, and create our own live score to a short silent film (to be selected from several options by the group during the workshop— Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin shorts will be in the running\, among others). When does one of these tools work best and why? \nAs a “final project” we’ll record our live score at the end of class\, and participants will receive a copy of the recording synced to film. \nParticipants should bring their own instrument\, voice\, laptop\, synthesizer\, turntable\, shortwave radio\, junk metal\, etc etc to create sound with. Open to all levels. \nAbout the instructor\nAva Mendoza is a Brooklyn-based guitarist\, singer\, songwriter and composer. Born in 1983\, she started performing her own music\, and as a sidewoman and collaborator in many different projects\, as soon as she was old enough to get into 18+ venues. Recordings are available on labels Tzadik\, Weird Forest\, Clean Feed\, NotTwo\, Resipiscent\, and New Atlantis. She has written and performed live scores to silent films commissioned by the San Francisco Film Society\, and recorded scores for Kino Lorber. \nFriendly critics have quoted: “It’s… Ava Mendoza’s deconstructing of blues and punk into brutal shredfests that’s causing a ruckus in NYC’s DIY hubs” (Brad Cohan\, Noisey.Vice). “A wizard on a semi-circle of effects pedals\, but… equally adept with FX-less technique\,” (Lars Gotrich\, NPR). SUMMARY:Intro to Electronics and Soldering: LED Graffiti
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop\n[NOTE: This is a three-session workshop. Session one runs from 10am – 1pm on Saturday\, March 10th\, session two runs from 10am – 1pm on Saturday\, March 17th\, and session three runs from 10am – 1pm on Saturday\, March 24th] \nIn this intensive hands-on workshop\, participants will learn about resistors\, Ohm’s Law\, and LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes)\, as well as gain practical experience in soldering\, through the creation of a small (roughly 8″ square) LED “drawing” that can be plugged in and placed anywhere indoors. The breakdown of the workshop series is as follows: \n\nSession one: Participants will design their LED “drawing” while learning about LEDs\, circuits\, and polarity.\nSession two: Instructors will lead participants in a soldering tutorial\, after which participants will solder their own projects.\nSession three: Instructors will lead participants in a basic electronics tutorial covering voltage\, current\, resistance\, and Ohm’s Law\, which will enable participants to adjust and complete their projects.\n\nNo previous experience with electronics and/or soldering is required. This workshop is most suitable for adults and youth aged 10 and up. We recommend that youth ages 10-13 be accompanied by an adult. This workshop has been made possible with support for the Ohio Arts Council. \nAbout the Instructors\nDr. Alison Colman’s first venture into new media and digital art was as an undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon University. She continued on this path as a freelance computer animator and graduate student at The Ohio State University\, where she received her MA and Ph.D. Most of her coursework was through the Advanced Computing Center for Art and Design at The Ohio State University\, where she developed a strong interest in 3D animation\, digital art\, cyberculture studies\, art criticism\, and education. She has published scholarly articles on digital art and theory in journals such as Visual Arts Research\, Studies in Art Education\, and the Journal of Social Theory in Art Education\, written artist reviews for the Tate Gallery Online and Furtherfield.com\, and has lectured on digital art and art criticism nationally and internationally. Her work has also been screened at Siggraph\, the Parsons School of Art and Design\, and the Big Muddy Film Festival. \nAfter teaching in the School of Art at Ohio University\, Athens from 2002-2007\, Dr. Colman founded the Fuse Factory Electronic and Digital Arts\, where she has served as its founding director up to the present. Under her direction\, the Fuse Factory has served hundreds of new media and sound artists and experimental electronic musicians from around the U.S. and Ohio\, along with thousands of people around central Ohio\, through its performances\, exhibitions\, and workshops. \nJesse Hemminger is a true renaissance man\, jack of all trades master of none. Jesse received his BFA in Art and Technology from OSU in 2001 and his MFA in Public Art from the Bauhaus University Weimar\, Germany\, in 2008. He is also a self taught computer programmer and when Jesse is not at his day job programming databases and websites you can find him building Sauerkraut Powered Robots or making Glowie Monsters at his studio at ILLIO.

SUMMARY:Performance: John Trudeau (MA) + Lisa Bella Donna (CMH) + The Jesus Fish Experience (CMH)
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 23rd\, we are proud to present experimental synth musician John Trudeau (MA)\, multi-instrumentalist/composer Lisa Bella Donna (CMH)\, and experimental/ambient project The Jesus Fish Experience (CMH). Doors 7pm\, cover $5. BYOB\, all ages. \nAbout the performers:\nHailing from the forests of Western Massachusetts\, John Trudeau combines classical training with Berlin-style sequencing of analog synthesizers to create transfixing melodies and hypnotic soundscapes. From an early age\, John had undergone rigorous classical training\, and has since combined his early influences with the more contemporary stylings of progressive rock. With an impressive array of keyboards in tow\, he will be performing an arrangement of his latest album\, “Ascent”. \nLisa Bella Donna is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, modular synthesist\, clinician\, all around sonic sorceress. She currently works with EYE\, Descendre\, Earthquaker Devices\, Simone Weißenfels\, Scotty Bottcher\, Elliot Levin\, Juan Alderate\, Jamie Stillman\, and many musicians and artists all throughout USA and Europe. \nThe Jesus Fish Experience presents a lush marriage of dissonance and harmony\, where otherworldly soundscapes blend seamlessly with hypnotic rhythms and haunting melodies. Minimalist\, and yet still intense and emotive\, their most recent album “Magnitudes Of Infinity” eschews (to a degree) the nihilism found in previous releases\, and instead looks outward towards a strange reality\, in which empiricism\, mythology\, spiritualism\, and the cold reach of science uneasily reside together. There may be more philosophical questions than answers presented by this album\, but trust me\, gnosis has never sounded this good.

SUMMARY:Performance: Secret Drum Band (OR) + Gnothi Seauton (CMH) + Wild Torus/Onism (NYC)
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, March 30th\, we are proud to present experimental percussion ensemble Secret Drum Band (OR)\, performance art ensemble Gnothi Seauton (CMH)\, and performance artists Wild Torus and Onism (NYC)(NYC). Doors 7:30pm\, cover $5. BYOB\, 21+. \nAbout the performers:\nSECRET DRUM BAND is a percussion ensemble based in Portland\, Oregon. Lisa Schonberg started the band in 2006 as a experimental quartet for Ladyfest Olympia. It’s current incarnation features five percussionists and two ambient musicians. Many of SDB’s works were composed in response to soundscape and form in locations chosen to draw attention to issues concerning endangered species\, ecosystem function\, and habitat loss. \nGNOTHI SEAUTON EPHEMERAL PERFORMANCE ART ENSEMBLE makes live interventions inspired by punk\, comics\, cinema\, science\, nightmares & dreams by live soundscaping & our own style of visceral movement theater & dance. our work is a catharsis through collision and conflict challenging how we see audience\, architecture\, music\, history\, myth\, and reality. it comes out of a deep desire for conspiracy\, soul-exchange\, and transformation. \nWild Torus (WT) refers to the dualistic yin/yang nature of the 2 leaders of the collective: Vlady Voz Tokk and Mág Ne Tá. Our rituals are mythical and hyper-sensory\, often with references to aliens overlords\, cult theologies\, and our own personal trajectories. They bring artists and audience members together to engender alternate realities and deconstruct the Internet-driven\, consumerist society we live in today through Fluxus-style happenings. We call ourselves Cyber Shamans\, as we believe that we are medicine people for the digital age. \nWild Torus (WT) refers to the dualistic yin/yang nature of the 2 leaders of the collective: Vlady Voz Tokk and Mág Ne Tá. They bring artists and audience members together to engender alternate realities and deconstruct the Internet-driven\, consumerist society we live in today through Fluxus-style happenings. We call ourselves Cyber Shamans\, as we believe that we are medicine people for the digital age. \nWild Torus is interested in the intersection of performance art with noise music and video installation. We are devoted to the avant-garde and genre-defying aspects of expanded performance. We use both shocking and subtle tactics to reinterpret pervasive cultural standards. Our goal is to create acceptance in the broad socio-cultural context of fringe and extreme ideas\, to lay the groundwork for the transformation of society from a culture of repression and control to a culture of openness and personal freedom. Our vision is to create uncommon\, sacred environments\, which confront technological displacement and physical alienation. New opportunities allow us to present challenging spectacles that subvert and exceed people’s expectations of an “art experience.” \nThe experience of ONISM is one that at first takes you to a comforting scene of erotic aesthetics. Tricking the mind into believe that your safe in the perspective of self\, it then rips off the vail of comfort and thrusts you onto a dinner plate of sensuality where you are the main course\, pushing and pumping emotions of pleasure and fear into your veins and leaving you with a sense of unfulfilled sensuality that afterwards makes you yearn for more.
