SUMMARY:October 2017 Frequency Fridays: Adi Newton (UK)/Park Jones Koi (Detroit)/Chalet Endure (CMH)/Moldover (CA)
DESCRIPTION:Our October 2017 Frequency Fridays show features experimental electronic musician Adi Newton (UK)\, electronic music trio Park Jones Koi (NJ)\, Jeff Chenault and David Reed’s dark ambient duo project Chalet Endure (CMH)\, and electronic musician Moldover (CA). Date: Friday\, October 6 2017. Location: It Looks Like It’s Open (13 E. Tulane Rd.\, 43202). Admission: $10\, $15 for 2. Doors open 8pm. BYOB\, all ages. Our Frequency Fridays 2017-2018 season is supported by grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAbout the performers:\nAdi Newton is the founder of industrial post-punk group Clock DVA and the ANTI Group\, an industrial jazz and visual arts project created in tandem with engineer Robert Baker. He is also the director of ARMComm Anterior Research Media Communications\, the production arm for ClockDVA/TAGC. \nPark Jones Koi is comprised of experimental musicians Joo Won Park (electronics)\, Molly Jones (woodwinds\, electronics) and Alex Koi (electronics\, voice). \nDavid Reed’s work has a deep\, long and dark trail. His numerous recordings and collaborations are legendary. Recording under the name of Lupine\, Luasa Raelon and Envenomist his sound can be extremely dark and challenging. His latest project as Chalet Endure is an ambient collaboration with Jeff Chenault. \nJeff Chenault is a non-musician who has been recording in Columbus since 1983. A cassette culture guru who has released music on his Exoteque Music cassette label for just as long. An early pioneer in the Columbus electronic music scene. His many musical projects include 10-Speed Guillotine\, Central Inhabitants\, Resonance and The Weird Lovemakers. He is a true underground artist who also writes books and releases rare exotica music in his spare time. \nMoldover grew up in Rockville Maryland\, patterning his earliest music after the rock\, pop\, and metal that spoke to him through radio\, television\, and his elder brother’s record collection. He wrote songs\, played in bands\, and taught himself the recording arts with a basement full of second hand instruments and a four track tape machine. In 1998 he moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music where he abandoned pop songwriting and shifted his focus to classical composition\, jazz arranging\, and electronic music production. Moldover graduated summa cum laude from Berklee and moved to New York City to work as a freelance musician. Intent on merging his love of playing in ensembles with his electronic compositions\, he wove his way through a series of live-electronic bands\, eventually becoming disillusioned with New York’s exclusive and socially complex live music scene. At the same time he began seeing his favorite electronic music artists play live\, but found that their stage performances lacked the creative fire of their recorded works. Seeing an opportunity\, he ventured out as a solo artist\, relocated to San Francisco\, and set about creating performances that would bridge the gap between traditional musicianship and modern electronic music culture.

SUMMARY:Coding sound: An Introduction to SuperCollider
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop\nParticipants will learn how to design sound and compose music using SuperCollider\, a text-based audio program. By the end of the workshop\, the participants will be able to create an algorithmic ambient music or a customized sound effect. The workshop is suitable for those who are interested in expressing musical ideas with numbers and codes. No previous coding experience required. There is no materials fee\, but the participants should bring a laptop with SuperCollider installed. SuperCollider is free and can be downloaded at http://supercollider.github.io/download.html \nAbout the instructor\nJoo Won Park (b.1980) wants to make everyday sound beautiful and strange so that everyday becomes beautiful and strange. He performs live with toys\, consumer electronics\, kitchenware\, vegetables\, and other non-musical objects by digitally processing their sounds. He also makes pieces with field recordings\, sine waves\, and any other sources that he can record or synthesize. Joo Won draws inspirations from Florida swamps\, Philadelphia skyscrapers\, his two sons\, and other soundscapes surrounding him. He has studied at Berklee College of Music and the University of Florida\, and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Music Technology at the Wayne State University. Joo Won’s music and writings are available on ICMC DVD\, Spectrum Press\, MIT Press\, PARMA\, Visceral Media\, MCSD\, SEAMUS CD Series\, and No Remixes labels.

SUMMARY:Performance: Mykel Boyd (IL) + Central Inhabitants (CMH) + Envenomist (CMH)
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Saturday\, October 14th we are proud to present sound/visual artist Mykel Boyd (IL)\, Jeff Chenault’s dark ambient solo project Central Inhabitants (CMH)\, and David Reed’s dark ambient solo project Envenomist (CMH)\, with very special guest visual and spoken word artist John M. SUMMARY:Performance: Eric Dontè (STL) + Angel of Deth (STL) + Paul Maul (CMH)
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Sunday\, October 22nd we are proud to present experimental hip-hop artist Eric Dontè (STL)\, experimental industrial-electronic musician Angel of Deth (STL)\, and DJ/producer Paul Maul (CMH). The performance will take place at the It Looks Like Its Open gallery (13 E. Tulane Rd\, cmh 43202). Admission: $5. Doors 7:30pm. BYOB\, all ages. \nAbout the performers:\nEric Dontè is a Red Bull Academy artist\, performed at Bonnaroo\, and is releasing their newest album “A Lamp in the Room” at The STL Contemporary Art Museum on October 20th. They call it “ghetto trance” music; you might call it dark\, twisted\, honest and minimalist. Donté\, who also goes by Fadda Vampire\, creates hip-hop confessions that sound cinematic\, even without the benefit of their stylish videos (Donté is also a model). Donté’s stream of consciousness flows in an eerie mist\, but it also reverberates\, like Tricky arriving strung out and late to an underwater séance in St. Louis. The 23-year-old native St. Louisan released the haunting God Don’t Like Ugly EP in 2016. \nAngel of Deth is the solo project of artist/photographer/industrial musician Hayden Molinarolo. \nJed James aka Paul Maul is a painter\, producer\, DJ and founding member of the Midwest Fresh crew in Columbus\, Ohio.

SUMMARY:An Intro to Sampling and Recording through Community-based Improvisation (repeat)
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop\nIn this workshop\, participants will be introduced to sampling and recording techniques through community based improvisation and audio journaling. The workshop instructors will provide live and digital instruments\, along with loopers\, effects pedals\, and basic music production gear; participants may bring their own instruments\, but this is optional. Participants will come away with a recording of a complete song built from the manipulated sounds generated during the improvisation session. \nMore specifically\, workshop participants will: \n\nExplore the idea that music is a human behavior and is hardwired into our human experience and existence.\nBecome familiar with music gear and music production considerations that include creating a structure from sampling improvisation in order to build a song.\nLearn about various tools that can be used to manipulate sound.\nWork together and support one another in creating a community based recording.\n\nThe workshop is open to all – no previous experience with a musical instrument or music production is required. \nAbout the Instructor\nKevin Cardoso is an analog hacker at heart and this nature has driven him to explore a variety of art forms that include wood\, metal\, paper\, clay\, music\, and electronics. As a creative arts therapist\, he has experience teaching people of various age groups and abilities. He feels that patience and flexibility is an important approach to help people loosen up\, learn\, engage with the process\, and find satisfaction with their work. \nBen Turner is a musician and songwriter\, and these interests have driven him to embrace the manipulation of sound in the home recording studio. He is a music therapist\, with a background in various age groups and populations. He attended the College of Wooster and the Cleveland Music Therapy Consortium. He believes that improvisation and audio recording are great platforms for embracing innate musicality\, and integrating the head and the heart.

Our Frequency Fridays 2017-2018 season is supported by grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, and the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAbout the performers:\nTusia Dabrowska is a time-based artist and writer. Her focus is on video and live art projects. Recent work has been seen at\, among others\, The Print Screen Festival (Tel Aviv\, Israel\, 2016)\, The Great Wall of Oakland (Oakland\, CA\, 2016)\, TAFNY (NY\, NY\, 2015)\, Loop Discovery (Barcelona\, Spain 2015)\, CologneOff (Cologne\, Germany/Tel Aviv\, Israel\, 2014)\, Slingshot (Athens\, GA\, 2014). Her writing/translation has appeared in the Nth Position (poetry)\, the Forward (translation)\, Aish (personal essay)\, Vida\, and The Vassar Review (translation). Tusia is a recipient of the Puffin Foundation Grant (2014) and an Asylum Arts alumni (2015 and 2016). In the winter 2017\, she will attend the Signal Culture Residency. She holds degrees from the New School\, Trinity College Dublin\, and NYU. Tusia shares her time between Warsaw and Brooklyn. \nMarcia Custer is a valley-girl-vocalizing\, noise-making clown-witch with a penchant for both the bizarre and the sublime. She makes live performance and sound events by building worlds of psychic chaos and physical comedy in real time. There are usually wigs and dolls. Whatever happens on stage (or in a basement\, or a bookstore\, or a backyard) is informed by the moment\, the feelings in the room\, the taste of the air. Her premier one-woman noise-comedy i went down to the water and found myselfie there (co-produced by Cleveland Public Theater) has been seen in Philadelphia\, Chicago\, Washington\, D.C.\, Chapel Hill\, Cincinnati\, and Pittsburgh. Based in Cleveland\, Ohio\, Marcia also sings with freak-pop band Half an Animal and has collaborated with artists like SPACEBEACH\, Khaki Blazer\, Faangface\, Ben Oblivion\, and NRML GRL. She holds a B.A. in Dance Studies from Kent State University\, where she received the School of Theater and Dance Award for Outstanding choreographer\, and completed a post-baccalaureate program at Headlong Performance Institute\, where she learned about clowning- french style (Lecoq)\, performative presence\, and alternative choreographic processes. \nVeronica Pejril’s music explores the liminal space between found-sound and surreal soundscapes. Relying primarily on “ordinary” sounds from everyday life for source material\, she manipulates and entangles those sounds into acoustically improbable realities. Veronica’s mentors and teachers include Paul Lansky\, Milton Babbitt and JK Randall. She draws further inspiration from the worlds of blues and jazz. Her most recent large publication\, Bluebird\, is available on iTunes\, Google Play\, and other digital repositories. \nBobb Hatt is an experimental artist who has been active for the last decade in Columbus\, OH. Drawing influence from free jazz\, performance art\, harsh noise\, and power electronics\, he has developed a sound that is abrasive\, texturally complex\, and very\, very loud. This particular performance will be delivered in stereo with an alto saxophone filtered through an array of electronic pedals\, utilizing beat frequencies\, pitch modulation\, layers of distortion\, and various other manipulations via powerful amplifiers\, with an animistic fascination for the sheer force the speakers can purvey.
