DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Thursday\, July 6th we are proud to present composer/experimental bassist TJ Borden (CA)\, experimental cellist Kyle Motl (CA)\, experimental electronic guitarist Mike Shiflet(CMH)\, and (CMH). The performance will take place at the It Looks Like Its Open gallery (13 E. Tulane Rd\, cmh 43202). Admission: $5. Doors 7:30pm. BYOB\, all ages. \nAbout the performers:\nKyle Motl is a bassist\, composer\, and improviser. Active in a variety of ensembles and settings\, Kyle’s work crosses the boundaries between idioms as wide as free jazz\, contemporary concert music\, folk musics\, and noise. Current work explores extended harmonic techniques for solo bass improvisation\, electroacoustic performance with live electronics and improvising software\, modular compositional schemes\, recursive and generative structuring\, and exploration of complex sonic spectra. \nKyle is a member of the Peter Kuhn Trio\, and has been performing in quartet and trio with Abbey Rader since 2011. He maintains regular duo projects with Drew Ceccato\, T.J. Borden\, and Adam Tinkle. The Kyle Motl Trio\, featuring Kjell Nordeson and Tobin Chodos is a collaborative platform for new compositions weaving complex composed structures together with free improvisation. Kyle has performed alongside artists including Anthony Davis\, Kidd Jordan\, Mary Halvorson\, Roscoe Mitchell\, Mark Dresser\, and Wadada Leo Smith\, among others. \nKyle holds a BM from Florida Atlantic University and an MM from Florida International University. He is a DMA candidate at UC San Diego\, where he studies bass with Mark Dresser. \nHailed for his “technically polished playing” as well as an “endless amount of musical knowledge and creativity”\, T.J. Borden is a rising force in the experimental music landscape. T.J. has performed with many contemporary music luminaries such as the JACK Quartet\, the Theater of Eternal Music Brass and String Band\, the Slee Sinfonietta\, Ensemble Offspring\, Tony Conrad\, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky\, and Steve McCaffery. He has performed at XFest in Massachusetts\, Soundways New Music Festival in St. Petersburg\, June in Buffalo\, the New Media Art and Sound Summit in Austin\, and the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival. His performance of Witold Lutoslawski’s “Cello Concerto” with the University at Buffalo Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Bassin was praised for how he “mastered the work’s intricacies with elegant grace.” Currently\, T.J. is a member of the [Switch~ Ensemble]\, a group dedicated to the performance of works that incorporate multimedia into live performance and is looking forward to performing with them at the VIPA Festival in Valencia\, Spain this summer. \nAs an improviser\, T.J. has toured throughout Europe and North America and his improvisations are included in Guggenheim Fellow Kasumi’s film “Shockwaves”. He is particularly committed to working directly with composers and has worked with several established composers such as Brian Ferneyhough\, La Monte Young\, and Alvin Lucier as well as many younger composers\, which is a priority for him. As a creative force\, Tyler has been commissioned to write and perform by a variety of entities\, including the Cleveland Institute of Art\, the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra\, and hammered dulcimer virtuoso Mitzie Collins. \nColumbus\, Ohio-based guitarist Mike Shiflet started Gameboy Records in the late 1990s\, releasing limited tapes\, 7″s\, and CD-Rs by dozens of noise and experimental artists\, including John Wiese\, Cock E.S.P.\, Lasse Marhaug\, Sudden Infant\, and Crank Sturgeon. Shiflet’s myriad recordings and performances explored harsh noise and drone\, often focusing on high frequencies. He joined violinist C. Spencer Yeh’s ensemble Burning Star Core in 2004\, appearing on several of the group’s recordings\, including Operator Dead… Post Abandoned and Papercuts Theater. Shiflet relocated to Japan in 2006\, continuing to operate Gameboy Records until 2008\, when he moved back to America. He released collaborations and splits with a number of artists\, including Aaron Dilloway\, Daniel Menche\, Keith Fullerton Whitman\, and Ryan Jewell\, and released a pair of solo albums on Type\, 2011’s Sufferers and 2012’s Merciless. He returned to Type in 2015 with his most atmospheric\, melodic album to date\, Awake\, a collaboration with Rhode Island-based High Aura’d.
