SUMMARY:Performance: Smomid + Rew + Seagull Died on Impact
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, April 14th\, we are proud to present sound designer/artist Smomid (PA)\, visual artist/VJ Rew (CMH)\, and multi-instrumentalist Reon Moebius’ solo project Seagull Died on Impact (CMH). Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm. Performance will take place in the Columbus Performing Arts Center Shedd Theater. $8 prepaid\, $10 at the door. \nAbout the artists: \nSmomid is a project by Nick Demopoulos\, who is a performer\, musician and instrument builder. Smomid only utilizes instruments he has designed and built to perform interactive computer music. The name is derived from an acronym of his primary instrument: “String Modeling Midi Device.” Smomid music often features glitchy and scattered beats\, sampling\, abstract textures\, ambient spaces\, and improvisation. Smomid music draws on many varied influences and creates bizarre juxtapositions with deft sonic versatility\, with samples of heavy beats\, Gregorian Monks chanting and Taiko drum sounds all coexisting comfortably. \nWithin her work\, Rew seeks to inspire awe and curiosity in the viewer\, in response to the intricacies of consciousness. Her art features ethereal visuals inspired by nature\, and sound that is atmospheric. Most recently\, she’s been animating strange landscapes and creating music that is gentle and unusual in tone. She reflects on the interconnectedness of life and the current fragile aspects of its manifestation on Earth\, and she aims to transmit her hope\, grief\, and reverence. \nReon Moebius is a self taught multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of the independent internet record label Argali Records\, which he co-operates with Nathan James Carter since 2009. As a transplant to Columbus: Reon Moebius has been actively working on both recorded material for his main-stay band projects (Collector Of Dust/Seagull Died On Impact)\, and loosely involved in performing at various special events and venues within Franklin County since moving in 2017. Seagull Died On Impact\, Reon’s second outfit\, was created to fill in for solo live performances to loosen pressure on the limitations imposed on his first band project due to lack of immediate collaborators and bandmates. Centered around thunderous synthesizer bass drones\, ritualistic drum machine programming\, Reon’s solo electric violin playing is given a vast yet intimate space to soar across: inspired by the taut\, hypnotic minimalism of the seminal New York industrial duo Suicide & Canadian avant garde violinist Nash The Slash. In a live setting\, this project is meant to bring the intense ‘wall of sound’ approach of the flagship outfit into a more direct and visceral manner.
