SUMMARY:Performance: Okapi (NC) + Andrew Kovaleski (CMH) + Chris Haas (CMH)
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Sunday\, September 8th\, we are proud to present Asheville avant-folk chamber duo Okapi\, along with experimental saxophonist Andrew Kovaleski (CMH) and experimental keyboardist Chris Haas (CMH). Doors 7:30pm\, cover $5. BYOB\, all ages. \nAbout the performances and performers:\nOkapi utilizes upright bass\, cello\, and voice through aggressive (yet intimate) orchestrations\, which carry messages encouraging individual empowerment\, healthy growth\, and the conscious confrontation with reality. \nAndrew Kovaleski is a saxophonist and bedroom pop musician from Columbus\, OH. He is currently attending Youngstown State University for his Master’s degree in saxophone performance. His improvisations explore the meditative energy of repetition and the raw\, natural sound of the saxophone. His first major bedroom pop album\, ‘The Chronicles of the Lizard Kid\,’ tells the tale of the creation\, life\, love\, and eventual death of the Lizard Kid\, an anthropomorphic lizard child who is both a man-eating killer monster and a person with human emotions. \nChris Haas is a multi-instrumentalist who focuses on long-form improvisations\, both in his solo performances and with the Columbus-based trio Sonikora. In addition\, Chris is a regular collaborator with other projects around Ohio\, ranging in form from totally free group improvisation to highly structured compositions\, and from abstract deconstructions of sound to melodic folk-pop lyricism. In any context\, Chris contributes a voice that is at once both complementary to the surroundings but identifiably unique. For this performance\, Chris will be playing an improvised set marrying effected rhodes piano with modified electric and acoustic drones.
