SUMMARY:Performance: Attorneys General (featured player: Brian Harnetty) + Christopher Appel
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, August 2nd\, we are excited to host experimental electronic musician Matthew Byars’ project Attorneys General with experimental musician Brian Harnetty as the featured player\, and spoken word artist Christopher Appel. Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm. Performance will take place at the Old First Presbyterian Church (1101 Bryden Rd. 43205). $8.00 online\, $10 at the door. \nOur 2023 touring musician program is supported by New Music USA. \nAbout the artists: \nAttorneys General is a project led by Matthew Byars of WYPR radio show and podcast Essential Tremors. In Attorneys General Byars and several collaborating musicians generate utterly improvised sound through a mixing board he controls\, which allows him to capture\, loop\, manipulate\, and destroy the sounds they create. Results vary from the transcendent to the disastrous\, but the inherent risk involved is\, ultimately\, the point. \nBrian Harnetty is an interdisciplinary sound artist who uses listening to foster social change. He is known for his recording projects with archives\, socially engaged sound works\, sound and video installations\, live performances\, and writings. His interdisciplinary approach has been compared to “working like a novelist…breathing new life into old chunks of sound by radically recontextualizing them” (Clive Bell\, The Wire). \nChristopher B. Appel is an established presence and long term active participant in local undersound circles committed to social justice\, collective evolution and integrated creativity. His extended body of work includes consistent improvised poetry presentations at the annual WhatYouWill Free Jazz Festival\, host of the Olde Towne East Jazz Coffee House series\, and a litany of martial arts and ecstatic dance practices. His first album “SolFlower” and book “The Vagabond Chronicles” are currently in production. As a professional social worker and child of the “You n I Verse” his creed remains: Love. Service. Balance. Behold.
