SUMMARY:November 2014 Frequency Fridays: Ben Miller (NYC) + Larry Marotta (CMH) + Cher Von (KY) + Ray Li (CMH)
DESCRIPTION:Our November 2014 Frequency Fridays show features multiphonic prepared guitarist Ben Miller (MI)\, experimental electric guitarist Larry Marotta (CMH)\, experimental vocalist Cher Von (CHI) and wearable technologist/musician Ray Li (CMH). Date: Friday\, November 7\, 2014. Location: It Looks Like It’s Open (13 E. Tulane Av.\, 43202). Admission: $10\, $15 for 2. Doors open 8pm. Our Frequency Fridays 2014-2015 season is supported by a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council. \nAbout our performers:\nCultivating his technique since the early 80′s\, Ben Miller/degeneration creates a sonic tapestry that defies standard guitar playing. Using a self-modified Gibson Kalamazoo\, Miller produces a dense multiphonic soundscape by outputting several pickups separately through various FX chains. With the addition of Casio SK1 8-bit sampling\, transistor radio\, analog synth and tapes\, it is difficult to discern where any one sound originates or where it is heading – and it is of this subliminal nature that Miller adheres to. \nLarry Marotta is a guitarist and composer based in Columbus\, Ohio. He is best known for his performances of free improvised music that combine his wide range of musical interests\, odd sense of humor\, and passion for sound as sound. In the past few years\, he has performed in Chicago\, New York City\, Cleveland\, Cincinnati\, Columbus\, Ann Arbor\, Lansing and Miami Beach. \nCher Von\, aka Chervon Koeune\, is an experimental vocalist\, performer\, and composer residing in Louisville\, KY. Cher Von is known for her unique vocal-style\, which blends a playful use of wordless vocalising with a sometimes throaty\, sometimes graceful delivery of ethereal melodies. Working primarily with a vocal processor\, a large Bass Drum\, and miscellaneous found sound objects\, her exploration has shifted to minimalist music concepts. \nRay Li is the inventor of SoundSpace\, an instrument which combines elements of electronics\, technology\, and music to make sound. With no chords or notes to memorize\, the musician has ultimate control. SoundSpace is a glove-based device which allows the player to “hold” and play music with his or her bare hands by making different movements and gestures.
