SUMMARY:March 2024 Frequency Fridays
DESCRIPTION:On the evening of Friday\, March 1st we are delighted to present electronic musician Jim Petty’s (NYC) solo project Crew Called Self\, experimental musician/multidisciplinary artist Rafael Vargas Bernard (FL)\, David Reed’s (CMH) solo project Envenomist\, and Reon Moebius’ (CMH) solo project Seagull Died on Impact. Doors 7:30pm\, show begins at 8:00pm sharp. $9.25 prepaid\, $10 at the door. \nSupporters of our 2023-2024 season include the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the Columbus Foundation. \nAbout the artists: \nJim Petty\, aka with his machines as Crew Called Self\, from New York Modular Society\, is a NYC based electronic musician who once called Columbus home around the turn of the millennium. With a heavy focus on a portable Eurorack modular system\, he uses various methods of synthesis and sound design to create driving rhythms and melodies with a funky electro and techno leaning aesthetic. He has 5 albums released with Halo Askew Entertainment\, 2 self-released live albums\, and an Ep released on NYMS REC\, as well as a number of self-released hip hop albums from the early 2000’s. \nRafael Vargas Bernard (b. 1979\, Puerto Rico) is a Miami-based Puerto Rican multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker with a background in visual art\, noise/experimental music\, computer engineering\, education\, and performance. Formerly managing the Education Department at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico\, he later co-directed the Mana Contemporary Miami / 777 Mall art complex. Rafael is co-curator and event co-producer for The Fake It Up Club and Operations Manager for the Chopin Foundation of the United States. His work explores vulnerability\, power structures\, autonomous systems\, chance\, chaos\, and the human experience through combinations of performance\, sound\, programming\, sculpture\, and painting. Rafael’s art has been featured in exhibitions by Exit Art NYC\, VOLTA NY\, Mana Contemporary\, Clocktower Productions\, Oolite Arts\, La Trienal Poligrafica del Caribe\, and the Wrong Biennale. His work is included in private collections and the permanent public collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico and the Museum of Art of Caguas and has been reviewed in the Art Newspaper\, Vice Magazine\, Medium\, and Art in America. \nSome people equate David Reed’s solo project Envenomist (CMH) with science fiction film scores; others envision solitary nocturnal travels through bleak urban settings. A fundamental strength of Envenomist is that these illusory backdrops remain open to interpretation. Taking inspiration from industrial\, ambient\, and the kosmische scenes along with altered states of consciousness\, the oceanic abyss\, and deep space\, Reed has been producing desolate soundscapes under the Envenomist moniker since 2005. \nReon Moebius is a self taught multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of the independent internet record label Argali Records\, which he co-operates with Nathan James Carter since 2009. As a transplant to Columbus: Reon Moebius has been actively working on both recorded material for his main-stay band projects (Collector Of Dust/Seagull Died On Impact)\, and loosely involved in performing at various special events and venues within Franklin County since moving in 2017. Seagull Died On Impact\, Reon’s second outfit\, was created to fill in for solo live performances to loosen pressure on the limitations imposed on his first band project due to lack of immediate collaborators and bandmates. Centered around thunderous synthesizer bass drones\, ritualistic drum machine programming\, Reon’s solo electric violin playing is given a vast yet intimate space to soar across: inspired by the taut\, hypnotic minimalism of the seminal New York industrial duo Suicide & Canadian avant garde violinist Nash The Slash. In a live setting\, this project is meant to bring the intense ‘wall of sound’ approach of the flagship outfit into a more direct and visceral manner.
