SUMMARY:In-person workshop: Make an Atari punk console
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop in which participants learn how to build a simple sound generator: the Atari Punk Console (originally designed as the “Stepped Tone Generator” by Forrest M. Mims III in 1980\, and re-christened the APC by Kaustic Machines with an additional line output in the mid-2000s). This device utilizes a dual 555 Timer-based analog circuit to make unusual sounds with square waves. \nThis class is intended for beginners (age 16+) in electronics and soldering. Participants will also be introduced to basic hand & power tools such as the hand metal punch and hand drill/drill press. Students must bring their own enclosure for their finished device; an Altoids curiously strong mint tin (1.76oz (50g) size) is most commonly used\, but anything that size or larger should also work as long as it can be opened and drilled/punched. No previous electronics experience is required. \nAbout the instructor: Sam Harmon is an electronic musician who performs as glacial23\, and is active with Maker’s Alliance\, Cleveland’s community-driven makerspace.
