DESCRIPTION:Our December 2018 Frequency Fridays show features experimental duo Benjamin Bennett (percussion) and Charmaine Lee (vocals) (NYC)\, experimental filmmaker Margaret Rorison (BALT)\, experimental musician/noise artist Amanda Rosanne Howland (CLE) and Caleb Miller and Nick Weckman’s experimental multi-instrumental duo project Sun Trash (CMH). Accompanying Sun Trash on visuals is Columbus-based video artist/filmmaker Cameron Granger. Date: Friday\, December 7 2018. Location: 13 E. Tulane Rd. 43202. Admission: $10 for one\, $15 for two. Doors open 8pm. All ages\, BYOB. Our Frequency Fridays 2018-2019 season is supported by grants from the Greater Columbus Arts Council\, the Ohio Arts Council\, and the Columbus Foundation. \nAbout the performers and artists:\nCharmaine Lee is a New York based vocalist from Sydney\, Australia. Her music is predominantly improvised\, favoring a uniquely personal approach to vocal expression concerned with spontaneity\, playfulness\, and risk-taking. Beyond extended vocal technique\, Charmaine uses amplification\, electroacoustic feedback\, and microphones to augment and distort the human voice. She has performed with leading improvisers Nate Wooley\, id m theft able\, and Joe Morris\, and maintains ongoing collaborations with contemporaries Lester St. Louis\, Conrad Tao\, Zach Rowden\, Leila Bordreuil\, and Ben Bennett. She has performed at venues such as the Met Breuer\, Roulette\, the Stone\, and Experimental Sound Studios (Chicago). As a composer\, Charmaine has been commissioned by the Wet Ink Ensemble (2018)\, and has a forthcoming commission with Spektral Quartet (2018). \nBen Bennett has developed a unique and highly physical approach to percussion which takes the lineage of jazz\, free-improvisation\, and extended technique as its foundation. In searching for an expanded sonic palette\, and more fluid movement between various timbres\, he has distilled the drumset into a compact assortment of drumheads\, stretched membranes\, and other objects which offer a wide variety of unconventional sounds from few materials\, which can be rearranged into different combinations during a performance. Bennett has played across the US and abroad as a soloist and with many high-level improvisors\, including long-running collaborations with saxophonists Jack Wright and Michael Foster. Recent projects include a quartet with Michael Foster\, Brandon Lopez\, and Nate Wooley\, site-specific performances with dancer/choreographer Jung Woong Kim\, and a duo with vocalist Charmaine Lee. Bennett is also a performance artist known widely for his YouTube channel\, Sitting and Smiling. \nMargaret Rorison is a filmmaker and curator from Baltimore\, MD. Her works often develop from explorations through rural and urban landscapes\, combining language\, sound and imagery to create installations\, films and live 16mm projections. Her recent films explore the visceral nature of memory and its dialogue between space and experience. She is interested in the potentials of storytelling through the use of 16mm projection and sound. Her work has been exhibited at Anthology Film Archives\, Ann Arbor Film Festival\, Edinburgh International Film Festival\, Images Festival\, Miami PULSE Art Fair\, Mono No Aware VI & VII\, Microscope Gallery\, The Moscow Museum of Modern Art and The National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. She currently teaches at The Maryland Institute College of Art and conducts workshops in various cities. \nAmanda R. Howland is a musician and writer living in Lakewood\, Ohio. Howland has been performing for over twenty years as an expressionist noise artist. She performs solo and in collaborations including the band Dead Peasant Insurance. She has performed on over fifty releases and produced several. Howland employs vocals\, shrill guitar\, tape collage and synthesizer to achieve her evolving vision. \nSun Trash is process music/ friendship duo of Nick Weckman and Caleb Miller based in Columbus\, OH. We strive to make something together. \nAn award winning filmmaker & video artist currently based in Columbus\, OH \, Cameron Granger fell in love with video because it was the one thing that let him tell stories to anyone that would listen. His recent work revolves around notions of blackness as they relate to the ‘American Dream’\, representation in film and media. He is a founding member of MINT\, a Columbus based art collective and project/gallery space and a 2017 resident artist at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. & he is very thankful to say that his work has screened and been exhibited in galleries and festivals both nationally and internationally.
