Tips for Making the Transition from Print to Web Design

Get the inside scoop from veteran Print Designer Katawi McKinney on making the switch from the paper world to the web world. You will learn Photoshop tips and web standards to help you understand and conquer web design.

This workshop is for aspiring Web Designers and/or current Web Designers looking for an efficient way to prepare artwork for Web Developers. In an increasingly electronic society, such skills are highly employable as well as fun and full of creative potential.

Saturday, June 26, 1-4PM

Students should bring their own laptops, if possible. We can provide a limited number of netbooks for those who need them.

Cost: $25 per adult student for the entire two-session workshop. Kids get in free, but 2 maximum, please!

Beginning Electronics

Build your own USB charger.

Has your cell phone or iPod ever died when you needed it the most? Lots of electronics are powered from a USB cable. Students will learn basic electronic design and soldering skills while putting together a handy USB charger that will run off a 9 volt battery. Class will also discuss possibilities to add solar power as a second power source.

Cost: $40

Max: 10 students.

Age group: 10yrs to adult.

Learn to Program with Robots.

Unlock the mysteries of programming by having fun with virtual robots.

Students will learn how to program virtual robots in an interactive development environment using the Squeak language. Elementary programming concepts will be covered in a way that is easy for novices of all ages. This is a beginner class. Instructions are given as if you have had no programming experience.

Squeak is a modern, open source, full-featured implementation of the powerful Smalltalk programming language and environment. Squeak is highly-portable – even its virtual machine is written entirely in Smalltalk making it easy to debug, analyze, and change. Squeak is the vehicle for a wide range of projects from multimedia applications, educational platforms to commercial web application development.

What to bring: Students will need to bring either a Windows or Mac based laptop. A customized version of Squeak will be distributed in class.

Make music while you draw.

Drawdio is an electronic pencil that lets you make music while you draw! It’s a great project for beginners: An easy soldering kit with instant gratification. Essentially, it’s a very simple musical synthesizer that uses the conductive properties of pencil graphite to create different sounds. The result is a fun toy that lets you draw musical instruments on any piece of paper.

Students will learn basic soldering skills and introductory to electronic components.

Cost: $43

Max: 10 students.

Age group: 8yrs to adult.

Date: This workshop will be offered twice: first on April 24^th, 10AM to Noon, and again June 19^th, 10AM to Noon

Understanding and creating your own schematics and circuit board layouts.

You will become familiar with symbols used in electronics engineering and have an understanding of tools and reference material used in drawing schematics in electrical and electronic fabrication.

What to bring: You will need to bring either a Windows, Mac or Linux based laptop. Freeware cad software will be distributed during class.

The theme for the Ignition 2.0 art show was “conversations”: engaging the audience and encouraging their participation. The exhibit featured art exploring human-to-human and human-to-machine discourse, connectedness, and social organization made possible by digital and electronic technology. Many thanks to Jonny Roller for the photography, and to all artists who submitted their work and helped keep our conversation alive!
