About the workshop

We are pleased to offer a live improv workshop with renowned saxophone player Jack Wright. Described twenty years ago as an “undergrounder by design,” Wright has been a saxophone improviser traveling through the United States and Europe since the early 1980s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. He is well known for having brought improvised music into the heartland of America at a time when it was totally unknown. Now at age 72, his musical range continues to span the width of his geographic explorations, from fiery, breathless free jazz to quiet, breath-filled, and often animalistic sounds. His work has been documented extensively on underground labels since the early 1980s. “Jack is utterly one-of-a-kind,” says Tom Orange, New Ghosts co-founder and Jazz Director for WCSB 89.3 FM. “Much of his playing would outrage a traditional sax instructor, but no one shows how much beauty and intrigue can be found by playing the ‘wrong’ way. Listeners with open ears and minds are going to be in for a treat.”
