About the performers:

Starting out as a vocalist and lyric writer, Truus de Groot’s career started at the beginning of the Punk Rock craze in 1976 in The Netherlands. She became passionate about experimental electronic instruments, which led her to design her own instruments, something she continues to do to this day. Her path has been a long and winding road around the world, collaborating with all types of people in a variety of genres and cultures. She is always looking for a new challenge, as she continues to seek exciting ways to express herself creatively through music, words, photography and film. With today’s cyberspace there are no more borders and creativity is abundant! There is a freedom to work with anyone in the world on a multi-media level. Many of her recent projects have been developed this way – this is a brand new level of collaboration for her that has proven to be very fruitful indeed.

Jeff Chenault is a non-musician who has been recording in Columbus since 1983. He is a cassette culture guru who has released music on his Exoteque Music cassette label for just as long. An early pioneer in the Columbus electronic music scene, his many musical projects include 10-Speed Guillotine, Central Inhabitants, Resonance and The Weird Lovemakers. He is a true underground artist who also writes books and releases rare exotica music in his spare time.

Andrew Demirjian is an interdisciplinary artist who creates experimental assemblages of image, sound and text that contest the narrow regimes of contemporary media conventions. At the core of his work is an interest in how language shapes experience, and how the designed dissemination of language can alter individual and collective consciousness. Typologies, the language of naming and the politics of categorization are often a focus of his projects. The pieces take the form of interactive installations, generative artworks, audiovisual performances and experimental documentaries. He is interested in using technology like surveillance, data science and virtual reality to oppose market interests and heighten critical thinking.

Andrew’s work has been exhibited at The Museum of the Moving Image, Eyebeam, Rush Arts, the White Box gallery, the Fridman Gallery, Cyberfest, Fieldgate Gallery, the Center for Book Arts and many other galleries, festivals and museums. The MacDowell Colony, Puffin Foundation, Artslink, Harvestworks, Diapason, The Experimental Television Center, The Bemis Center, LMCC Swing Space, The Visual Studies Workshop and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are among some of the organizations that have supported his work. Andrew teaches theory and production courses in emerging media in the Film and Media Department at Hunter College.

Lisa Miralia has been a promoter and performer in the NE Ohio freeform and experimental sound communities since 2003. She composes for and performs in a number of projects both solo (as Baat) and in collaboration with others involving electro-acoustic improv, experimental electronics, noise, drone, and dark ambient sound, and has released several recordings and contributed to multiple collaboration and compilation releases. She will celebrate her 7th anniversary of hosting the Mysterious Black Box radio show on WCSB 89.3fm this year, and was featured in the City/Ruins documentary about the NE Ohio noise and industrial music scenes. Lisa lives in Lakewood, and is grateful for open-minded neighbors who don’t mind the strange musical and anti-musical sounds emanating from her abode.

About the visual artists:

Matt Swift is an all-around visual artist living in Columbus, Ohio. His work is not limited to any one medium or mode including photography, painting, video, digital compositions, mixed media and anything else that may be a source of inspiration. With an education in Art History, Film and Media Studies, and Library Science, the majority of his work stems from a deep connection to the historical avant-garde and experimental movements of all art forms. Juxtaposition of styles to find new abstract connections is where most of his work begins. Every piece is scientifically and creatively an experiment with a hypothesis that is tested and either is proven or disproven. What engagement occurs when you mix meditation and action painting to create a wall scroll combining the styles of Jackson Pollock and Zen Buddhist painters? What about the combination of purist structuralist cinematic techniques with the motivations of Norman McLaren’s frame by frame hand etched animations inspired by music? The end result encompasses a documentation of the experiment fit for a postmodern world, updating and educating about the styles of old through the lens of the plethora of information that is at the fingertips of our ever shrinking but also expanding digital world.

Nicolette Swift is the founder and owner of Nicolettecinemagraphics. Her roles include general business operations, production management, cinematography, color grading, editing, and much more. Her background includes a Bachelors of Arts in both Film Studies and Art History from the Ohio State University and a Masters in Library and Information Science with a focus in digital collections preservation and access from Kent State University. Since 2003, Nicolette has been providing an array of media production services to businesses, non-profits, and residents of the Central Ohio area. Nicolette is a well round digital and analog media specialist handling film photography, digital photography, videography, web and media installation and consultation, as well as producing her own projects which have shown at festivals and competitions across the US and abroad. Over the past decade Nicolette has provided many services to the public offering workshops for the Greater Columbus Arts Council, 4-H, and Adobe Inc. She has a long history of curating moving image programs around Columbus, Ohio as part of organizations such as The Columbus Moving Image Art Review, The Columbus International Film + Video Festival, Comfest, and the Independents Day Festival.

In 2014 Nicolette was awarded a Greater Columbus Arts Council Media Arts Fellowship for her work in moving image art.
