About the performers:

Rocco Di Pietro was born in Buffalo, New York in 1949. He studied composition and piano with Hans Hagen and Lukas Foss in Buffalo and at the Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood. He studied in New York and Darmstadt with Bruno Maderna and was a freelance composer for twenty years before earning degrees from SUNY Buffalo and Vermont College.He became an interdisciplinary adjunct professor teaching in prisons and on many college campuses throughout New York, Ohio, and California. He toured California prisons as artist-in-residence and conducted four years of interviews in Chicago with Pierre Boulez. The resulting book, DIALOGUES WITH BOULEZ, was recently published by Scarecrow Press. He composed Prison Dirges I for the Kronos String Quartet. Di Pietro’s music has been performed by many musicians in venues throughout the world, and his work has developed on several fronts. Sound text radio works have developed simultaneously with his teaching at Columbus State College of electronic music and other courses in the Humanities. These works have been broadcast on radio stations in Seattle, Chicago, Baltimore, Detroit, New York and around Europe, including Naples, Rome, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest. Kevin Holland is a multi-intrumentalist, electronic musician, amateur programmer, and DIY enthusiast. He received his degree in Music from OSU in 1999, and has spent over a decade in the electronic and computer music fields. A guitarist of 22 years, he co-owns a teaching studio with his wife in Grandview, Ohio. Under the moniker “sineqube”, he has written over 500 electronic works, produced three studio albums, and released 6 music applications for the Macintosh platform. His recent work combines original software, live looping, homemade electronic instruments, generative systems, and audience interactivity. His latest album, Qbloop Selections I, is similar to his recent live performances. Albums are available through iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby. Kevin has been releasing software built with Max/MSP for almost a decade. Much of it freeware, he believes that budget should not be a constraint on artists’ creativity, and enjoys providing interesting, quirky tools for the computer musician. Students will learn how to make a simple (and geeky!) text-based adventure game and in the process learn some essential PHP programming.

To benefit from this workshop, students should have a basic knowledge of the following:

• XHTML 1.0 (Understanding of basic tags such as body, h1, div, p, ul, li and input elements)
• CSS 2 (Understanding basic styling such as font, color, padding, margin)
• How to use a plain text editor to write code. We will go over how to use an editor such as Komodo Edit, which will aid you with code hints and keeping code clean
• Some knowledge of how the internet works, specifically that fact that a user’s computer connects to server over the internet, and that the server “serves” up a website

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop with the following applications:

• Text editor, preferably one with code hinting like Komodo Edit or Coda
• Firefox
• Firebug
• WAMP (or MAMP for Mac users)
• Wireless connection optional but nice to have

Participants are also encouraged to bring paper & pencil for notes and “sketching” the flow of your adventure. The instructor will provide participants with some sample code. Any questions can be directed to the workshop instructor.
