HTML5 + CSS3 101 (FULL)

HTML5 and CSS3 are the new web standard.  It isn’t coming, it’s here now and already being used on websites like YouTube and TED (a favorite of instructor Jason Gonzales).

But HTML5 and CSS3 are not just about us coders having more geeky fun. The new web standard is concerned with making web applications more usable.  If you have a great idea for a web application, you will want to take advantage of all the new standard has to offer.  Not only are the additions to the standard fun to work with, but they make your web applications easier to deliver to desktop and mobile users.

In HTML5 + CSS3 101, you will get an overview of all the major features of the new HTML5/CSS3 web standard, learn the significance of web standards, and begin putting together a cool web application using HTML5/CSS3 and JavaScript.  The goal for this class is to begin making a tricked out personal/portfolio website.  So, come ready with content (including, text, images, audio and video) and we will have the beginning of a great new site for you.  You will leave with a head (and laptop) full of knowledge and the website to prove it.

In order to get the most benefit out of this class, you should have some basic knowledge of HTML4 and CSS2.  Experience with JavaScript is benefical, but not necessary (by the time you are done with the class, you will know more about JavaScript and be fired up to learn more!)

This course can be taken by itself, but also works as part of a series that includes the next level: HTML5+ CSS3 201.

Required “materials”

  • A laptop with wireless internet connection – the Fuse Factory can loan one to you for the duration of the workshop, if you do not have access to one
  • Google Chrome, Opera 10.0+, and Firefox 3.6+ (with Firebug installed)
  • Text editor for writing code. I will be using Komodo Edit, but if you have a favorite text editor, use that
  • If you are bringing audio or video files to include in your site, they should be in H264 format or Ogg (we will go over these in class too)
