Over the past 3 years, JavaScript has become an increasingly important part of web development. JavaScript takes on some of the tasks which make websites and web applications responsive to user input and provides simple, useful (ok, not always useful) animation.

While JavaScript has been around for much longer than 3 years it has only recently become relied upon heavily due to the advent of the following:

* Faster computer processing
* Better implementations of JavaScript in browsers
* AJAX
* Extensions of the language via open-source libraries

In a series of three workshops, people will learn how to make websites and web applications interactive and dynamic. We will learn how by using JavaScript and two libraries that make it efficient for programmers to make sites that do some pretty amazing things. And all from free and open-source technologies! The series is intended for people who know the basics of making a static web page (HTML & CSS) and want to learn to add some ’special sauce’. The series will focus mainly on getting workshoppers to implement JavaScript to make simple and useful animations, and will build on good coding practice and fundamentals of programming.

In this workshop (the first of the series), beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of JavaScript and will wrap up with learning how to make a simple animation from scratch with an invitation to extend yourself and experiment.

To benefit from this class, students should have a basic knowledge of the following:

1. HTML4 /XHTML 1.0 (Understanding of basic tags such as body, h1, div, p, ul, li and input elements)
2. CSS 2 (Understanding basic styling such as font, color, padding, margin, background)
3. How to use a plain text editor to write code. We will go over how to use Komodo Edit, which will aid you with code hints and keeping code clean.
4. Some fundamental knowledge of how the internet works.

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop with the following software installed (we have some laptops available – if you would like to reserve one, please email us.

* Komodo Edit
* Firefox
* Firebug Extension
* internet connection optional but nice to have
* Favorite notetaking tool or paper & pencil!

The workshop instructor will provide workshop participants with code samples and examples.
