Living in a world of data abundance, artists are exploring ways to combine, manage, and represent data sets both large and small via data visualization. Data visualization can be defined as the presentation of data along with the visualization of the various relationships between those data. While data visualization is not limited to the work of creative professionals, a number of artists and designers have been at the forefront of this emerging field.
The purpose of this workshop is to discuss working with data to communicate information clearly. In a nutshell, this workshop will show you how to take a basic data set and explore many free options that go beyond regular charts and graphs.
Topics include:
- Examples and some current trends
- Dataset basics, and “looking at your data”
- Literal presentation vs. artistic approaches
- Mixing different types of data
- Making graphics online, or with desktop applications
Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a wireless-enabled laptop. While there are no prerequisites for this workshop, it is strongly recommended that you have some working knowledge of at least one kind of spreadsheet application (MS Excel or Open Office), and have some experience with either HTML or JavaScript.
About the instructor: Thomas works as a database administrator and contributes to the open source community. He has exhibited his data visualization artworks at The Fuse Factory’s Ignition 1.0 and Ignition 2.0.
