Coding for Beginners with Scratch

Location: Junctionview Studios, 889 Williams Ave, Columbus 43212
Time: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
Workshop level: Beginner
Instructor: Alison Colman
Cost: $25

This introductory-level workshop is designed for adults and youth who are interested in learning computer programming but have little to no experience with any programming or scripting languages. This workshop is also beneficial for K-12 educators who wish to use Scratch in their classroom. Scratch is an open-source application that was developed at MIT as a teaching tool to help children and teens learn programming while creating interactive games and animations.

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce participants to basic programming concepts through an intuitive, easy-to-learn interface, with the goal of getting them comfortable with branching out to other easy-to-learn scripting languages (such as HTML) and programming languages (such as Processing). This workshop is not meant to serve as a foundation for learning more advanced programming languages.

In addition to learning how to use Scratch, participants will also engage in a team-building exercise in which they will create an interactive game with a partner.

Scratch can be downloaded for free. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a wireless-enabled laptop.

About the instructor:: Dr. Colman is the founder and executive director of The Fuse Factory. She has over 12 years of K-16 teaching experience; her specialty is developing instructional methods and curriculum for new media art and computer graphics.
