Intro to HTML 4.01 (FULL)

This workshop is designed to teach HTML to those with little or no background in creating Web pages using scripting languages. Participants will take away the basic skills needed to create a functional web site, as well as the resources to learn more advanced HTML skills independently. This workshop also serves as a basis for introductory workshops covering CSS and PHP.

Workshop topics will include:

Web Site Basics:

  • A very brief history of HTML
  • Resources
  • How a Web site works (understanding elements and tags: the DNA of HTML)
  • How HTML editors work

HTML Tool Box Basics:

  • Headers
  • Paragraphs and line breaks
  • Adding images
  • Adding links
  • Lists

More HTML basics:

  • Anchors
  • Preformatted text
  • Flowing text around images
  • Tables

Other Good Things to Know:

  • Using validation to check for errors
  • Using special characters
  • Saving time with global search and replace
  • Testing your Web site for use with various browsers and on various platforms
  • Design tips and guidelines
  • A glimpse ahead: what skills will I need next?

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a wireless-enabled laptop of their own. However, there will be five laptops available for those who do not have one. If you have any questions about the workshop, please do not hesitate to email the instructor.

About the instructor: Alison is the Founder and Executive Director for the Fuse Factory. She has worked with new media as an artist since 1990, and has taught new media for nearly a dozen years.
